LSU is pretty much done. That ends any discussion of a 2-loss team making the playoff. The interesting question is whether Georgia, Michigan and TCU are in no matter what happens next week? Last spot might be between USC and Ohio State, with USC obviously having control over their destiny (assuming they don't collapse with a 17-point lead in the 4th Qtr vs ND).

USC wins, and almost certainly jumps up to the 4th spot in the rankings heading into championship weekend.

Who they play next depends on what happens in the Apple Cup. If Washington wins, Utah will be USC's opponent. If Washington State wins, it will be Oregon. Wazzou is currently up 3-0 midway though the 1st Qtr.

In what has otherwise been a rough day for Heisman hopefuls, Caleb Williams is making a statement.

His final stats tonight:

18/22, 232 passing yards, 35 rushing yards, 4 total touchdowns (1 passing, 3 rushing)

This Apple Cup game is off the hook. 28-27 Washington at halftime. ESPN should be ashamed for putting this on such a terrible time slot.

Crazy that the outcome of this game will decide which of two teams that aren't even playing will be in the Pac-12 CCG (Oregon or Utah).

Crazy that it appears the top 3 playoff teams are pretty much settled at this point. Factor in that USC plays Friday night, and the field could be completely locked in before Championship Saturday even kicks off.

I mean TCU beating K state ain’t a lock. And, you know, LSU could beat Georgia (who would obv still get in but it would give the talking heads something to yell at each other about on TV)…

I'm not saying any of the Top 3 can't be upset. I'm saying even if they were I think it is very unlikely to knock them out of the playoff.

What happens to Michigan if they lose to a Purdue team not in the CFP Top 25?
Guess you would have to also know what happens with TCU and USC....

My thoughts:

- I'd have put Michigan ahead of Georgia. That said, assuming they both win this Sat, I'd probably put Georgia back on top based on their upcoming opponents, so no biggie.

- K-State at #10 is good for TCU. Even if the Frogs lose, unless it's a blowout have to think they are still in.

- I still believe that USC is the only one of the Top 3 that has to win this weekend to make it. Sucks for them that they can only play their way out, since they'd already be in if it were over now. Meanwhile, Ohio State gets to sit at home this weekend and root for Utah, while thinking about how they lost their last game by 22 points at home with their opponent's best player out. Seems fair.

- Alabama #6 and Tennessee #7? Let's see....Alabama's best wins are over #20 and #24. Tennessee's best wins are over #15 and....#6 Alabama. Got it.

- Clemson at #9? Does any reasonable person really think they are the 9th best team in the country?

- Thought it was a joke that both the AP and Coaches polls had Oregon 15th and Oregon State 16th. Glad the CFP committee got that one right.

- With both Tulane and UCF in the Top 25, and no other G5 in the rankings, that guarantees the winner of their game gets the NY6 bowl bid.

I believe Michigan is still in the Top 4 if they lose. Don't see who else you could make a case for getting in.

The spread with Ohio State is a little hard to say OSU...   but could argue OSU having 1 loss to Michigan is better than 1 loss to Purdue... but again, Michigan's h2h was so convincing, I agree with you there.

Obviously Alabama doesn't have another game, but their name always carries cache. I also think Michigan would get in over Bama... but Saban will argue losing road games at Tenn and LSU is better than a neutral field loss to Purdue.

I'm sure Michigan wins though, so whatever.

USC / Utah is interesting. Chance to avenge that 1 point loss.  Utes always physical. A game where neither team will surprise each other.

TCU / KState...    I think TCU did themselves a big favor by beating up Iowa State.  62 points, not playing around.   TCU / KState was a 10 point game a month ago.

If Utah and KState win, at-least one of Ohio State / Alabama gets in, and maybe both.   If Purdue / Utah / KState all win, then I'm thinking Ohio State and Alabama definitely get in...  with probably Michigan still getting in.  Maybe they'd have Big Ten / SEC  Semifinals.

Alabama's name (what they've done in the past) and whatever argument Saban wants to make are supposed to be meaningless, though I always wonder if that's truly the case. Thing is you not only have to make a case for them to move ahead of Michigan if they lose (and MI dropping that far won't happen, but just for discussion) but you also have to make the case for bumping Alabama ahead of Ohio State when neither team plays this weekend.

Like I said above, I don't see how you even make the case for having Alabama ahead of Tennessee.

Alabama 2 losses... 3 points vs. Tennessee, 1 vs. LSU

Tennessee 2 losses.. 14 vs. Georgia, 25 vs. South Carolina   lost Hooker...

In that scenario, they lost the close h2h...  and their 1 point loss at LSU is better than Tennessee's loss vs. South Carolina... and after losing Hooker, can't look at them the same.

If the Hooker injury is part of the case, then ok, I can see that. Absent that, I don't agree.

The one team that I would give better than a puncher's chance of beating Georgia is still Ohio State, despite what happened Saturday. Interesting scenario is that if USC loses, OSU slides into #4 and gets Georgia in the semifinal.

It hasn't been a great day in the college football world. First, Florida QB Jalen Kitna, son of former NFL QB John Kitna, was arrested on charges of distributing child pornography. Then just while ago police in Lincoln, NE announced that Mickey Joseph, who was the Huskers interim head coach this past season, was arrested for strangulation and third-degree domestic assault.

In the last 5 days, New Mexico State beat Hugh Freeze's old team by 35 points, and received a waiver formally eliminating Hugh Freeze's new team from bowl eligibility.

There are now just two potential spots for teams that went 5-7. One of those could go away Friday night when a game between Akron and Buffalo (5-6) that was postponed due to the recent snowstorm is made up. If Buffalo wins, then the 5-win spots for bowl bids will be NMSU and Rice. If Buffalo loses it will be NMSU, Rice and UNLV.

Auburn would have been the next one up on the APR list if the NCAA declined New Mexico State's waiver request, due to their game against San Jose State being cancelled because a SJSU player died earlier that week.
