They still lost to Iowa. Shows how hopeless we have become under Turgeon, where we’re looking for silver linings after losing to Iowa. Maryland basketball should be permanently better than Iowa.

Absolutely correct, and I think your comments underscore, how important the next hire is.

The Terps have to get the right guy for next year and beyond.

Based on efficiency from Kenpom that was both their best offensive day and worst defensive day of the season

Iowa is a good program with some decent recent history and good long term history. I don't know why you expect them to be a mid-major caliber pushover.

But I admit I am pretty hopeless grasping for straws.

It said in post 1 that Iowa was #22 in KenPom. Losing to that kind of team on the road isn't some kind of disaster. Even very good teams lose their share of those kind of games.

What they really need to do is stop losing to the likes of Penn State and Northwestern, especially at home.

Fair.  They played well on offense and at times slowed the fast pace Hawkeyes down.  The thing they could not overcome was Keegan Murray.  He is a terrific offensive player who was red hot last night.  Even with that, the game was on the line in the last minute.  Maryland down 2, played great defense and forced a off balance 3, I think by Bohanon or Touisant, which was well short, but unfortunately fell right into the hands of Murray who laid it in.   Iowa got a little luck at the end.

I don't know why either, because it isn't something that I said, at all.

All I'm saying is, a program like Maryland should always be disappointed when losing to a program like this, not looking for silver linings. Not a complaint about last night's game, necessarily, but the bigger picture. That this is where we are. Natty in 2002 --> 2022, looking for silver linings in a loss to Iowa.

I think that saying that Maryland should always be disappointed if we lose to Iowa is either implying that Iowa is a pushover school, or that Maryland is a blue blood. Frankly I don't even think a blue blood should be automatically disappointed if they lose to a consistently decent-to-good program like Iowa on the road. And Maryland is not, and has never been, in that tier of programs.

Agree to disagree, except for the Terps not being a blue blood part.

Michigan State is 5-3 at Iowa since 2010-11, which is when Sports Reference starts letting you search for the data

Michigan is 2-6 in the same stretch and that stretch includes two national title game appearances

And now Maryland is 2-3, obviously with fewer games because of the moving conferences

And were their fans cool with it? Just nonchalantly looking for the positives? Or do you think they feel like they should’ve won those games? It’s a mindset thing, missing my point.

At this point I get the sense that the majority of knowledgeable fans are grudgingly understanding of the fact that winning against top-50 programs on the road is really hard, and they shouldn't expect games like these to be much better than a coinflip.  I could be mistaken, because most of my interaction with opposing team's fans is on reddit, and that's unlikely to be a representative sample.

But if you're in a power basketball conference and you go 3-3 or 4-3 in road games against top-50 opponents, you're pretty much guaranteed a 2 seed at worst as long as you mostly take care of business for the other parts of your season.  I think that disappointment is possible (likely) on a season-to-season basis if you are expecting your team to compete for a 1 seed, but I don't think that even the best programs expect a 1 seed every year, so I don't think that these teams should automatically be disappointed that they lost to a ~25 team that is traditionally a 2nd tier program on the road.

Maryland should be the kind of program that expects to beat Iowa. It’s really that simple for me. No, I won’t be calling for Enfield or Williard’s head when they lose to Iowa at some point inevitably, you lose games. Every team does. But Maryland not being in a place where they expect to be better than freaking Iowa is just pathetic and it’s why Turgeon started getting booed at home. People are sick of this raging mediocrity, there’s no excuse for it. It’s a mindset thing.

I get what Ricker is saying.

He wants to be at a level where if you drop a game like this you don't just write it off as an admirable effort and move on to the next game.  He wants it to sting because it's a game you usually win.

Agree with Hallas last post, but bigger picture, I agree with this post. MD should be better.

For where MD is today / this moment; there were some positive takeaways from this game for me though.

I get what you're saying. And in no way am I okay with the state of the program. I'm going for moral victories because I know we aren't that good. I maybe am picking nits, but I felt like the way you came off was a bit disrespectful to Iowa as a program. I think they are a good enough program that even if Maryland were vying for a number 1 seed, we might be disappointed but not necessarily surprised that we lost to a team like them on the road.

Iowa honestly isn’t the greatest example, although we should always expect to be better. They’re a solid program. And he’s crazy, but I actually kind of like Fran.
