It's definitely possible to find a better replacement, but just as possible to find someone worse.

Why would that matter? Most likely, nobody whom Turgeon was actively recruiting will be coming. That's true whether he's fired now or in March. You fire the coach you lose all the current players and recruits. I would expect every recruit to be lost and several of the current team to transfer out. That's the cost of doing business, frankly.
Fingers crossed that Reese stays. The rest don't really matter, IMO.

Having a lame duck coach who everyone knows is gone at the end of the season is just as bad for recruiting.

The hints have been there for a while that MD/Turgeon seemed ready to part ways; but so soon after getting an extension and so early in the season is not how I saw it ending at all.

If you know you aren't keeping the guy, there is no point or value-added to keep him through the season.

Things were pretty damn quiet on the recruiting front anyway. They have one 3 star guy for '22 and werent in great shape for anyone of significance in '23. The young guys here outside of Reese arent playing anyway.

Recruitment of players, or a new coach?
The players don't really care, and Turgeon didn't really have anyone big coming in here lately anyway.
But anyway, yes, I'm floored. And my interest is the rest of this season just went way up. As others have mentioned he's a good man and I wish him no ill will, but it was time.

On a fan level, I have never been happier about a coach parting ways. I’ll be at the game Sunday to celebrate.
Weird circumstance (as in like never happens) of an interim coach taking over a more than likely NCAA Tourney team.
I want the team to enjoy this season but wouldn’t it be hard to get rid of Manning if he leads them to say the 2nd round?

I think they are well outside the bubble right now. If they make the tournament then Manning is going to have a lot of advocates wanting to give him the job permanently.

With his head coaching track record? It should be quite easy to send him packing after the season. They shouldn't even give a passing thought to making him permanent.

Manning and Turgeon were college teammates - I wonder if that was awkward.

Right. He was horrible at Wake plus MD fans are not going to go for another Kansas guy that Turgeon brought in

Also Reese’s sister being on campus is huge. He really is one of the primary goals of whatever happens next. But as good as he is, gotta get the right coach. Way more important in the long term.

Well then lets hope he doesnt make the tourny
Eff that. They can make a smart decision even if it's tough. I can't root for the team to lose.

Can he teach the team to run an offense.
If he can, I might approve just on that, even if we lose every game 95-90 haha.

I think part of stepping aside for Turge was to give Danny a shot to show something. I think Turge was as done with MD as the program and fans were with him. He flirted with leaving after last year. I dont know that his heart was in it this year. Of course Im speculating.

Wonder if this has any impact at all on Graham? Probably not.

Lucky for us, I don't think this team is talented enough for that.
