BSL: Thoughts On The Orioles Signing Jordan Lyles; And His Slider
https://baltimorespo...and-his-slider/

I'll react to the article Nick.

The slider info was interesting. That gives a reason to see a possible up-tick.

Overall, Lyles was a guy that they had familiarity with, and fit their profile of not wanting to give out multiple years.

He's not good, but below average would be an upgrade.

Now get two more similar types.

Nice work Nick.  I don’t think anyone is excited about Lyles, but he is a major league player.  Last year we had a staff of guys who were clearly not.

As Chris said, lets have 2 more.  I actually think the lockout, may make it easier for the Orioles to get another usable starter or two.  The longer it goes the shorter time, the lower level free agents have to find a deal.

RHP Jordan Lyles has officially agreed to a one-year, $5.5M deal with the Orioles, per source. Deal also includes a $500K signing bonus and a club option for 2023.

I like that we have a club option just in case. Assuming the buyout is minimal

Cots says the buyout is $1M and the option is $11M. Seems unlikely. So it’s a 1/7 deal.

I think he is holding GRod's spot.  The option gives a traded-to team something to consider for 2023.

Maybe he's Charlie Morton.  We can hope.

3 very good starts, 2 pretty crappy starts. Either way he has been more or less eating innings like it was promised.

Given up the most hits in the league. Very bad WHIP. Hes very much as advertised. He will be a 5.00 guy but he will throw 160+ innings

He threw 117 pitches yesterday, the only person to have thrown more pitches in a start this year is Hunter Greene

Is it ok to call him an innings eater now?

I think our pitching coahces "fixed" him and he'll be a 4.50 ERA guy.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Lyles is better than I thought he was.  The ERA means very little to me, in regards to Lyles.  The man stays in the fight and stays in games longer than most, which is what this Oriole team needs.

He looked a little rocky early last night, made adjustments and battled.  I loved the way, he was begging Hyde to let him keep going.  He knew the BP was on fumes and last until the 7th, which helped the Orioles go to Bautista and then Lopez without using anyone else.

Lyles reminds me of Chris Tillman.  They both were battlers who put the team first..

And by the way, he beat Cole last night.

He's been great.  If you know who is going to be good, no sense in wasting a season.

Yesterday felt like the quintessential innings eater start for better and for worse of 7 innings, 4 runs and 111 pitches

He's been basically everything expected.  Not good, but he can get deep into games.  Averaging just over 5 2/3 IP per start, which only about 30 guys across the league are exceeding (5.13 IP/GS is league average).

His FIP/xFIP is actually quite a bit better than his ERA, so maybe he's due to see the ERA go down if he continues pitching like this.

The WAR calculators are dramatically different, because Baseball Reference is based on ERA and Fangraphs is based on FIP.  Lyles's FIP is over half a run lower than his ERA and so his fWAR is 1.3 while he is below replacement at -0.3 bWAR.  Obviously since the two biggest resources use different methods to calculate the same stat, there is some ample disagreement from people who really care and think about this deeply over which should be used.  I prefer the ERA-based bWAR, personally, when looking backwards to gauge how valuable a guy's performance was.  I'd use fWAR if thinking about who I want for next season.

Lyles battled yesterday and got through 7 innings.  In a game where Cease made the Oriole bats look like little leaguers, Lyles at least got most of the BP the day off.
