After five straight home games to begin their season, Maryland will travel to The Bahamas for a two-game stint as part of the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship. Their first matchup comes on Thanksgiving night against Richmond, who currently holds a 3-2 (0-0 A-10) record. The Spiders have wins over Georgia State, Hofstra, and North Carolina Central, and losses to Drake and Utah State. Chris Mooney is in his 17th season as their head coach, and they finished the 2020-21 season with a 14-9 (6-5) record and a trip to the NIT where they lost in the quarterfinals to Mississippi State.

Richmond poses the biggest challenge to the Terps so far, particularly on offense. Led by junior forward Tyler Burton and senior center Grant Golden, they're shooting 46% from the field so far including 40% from beyond the arc. They also boast a 17:10 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Maryland will face either Louisville or Mississippi State on Saturday depending on the outcomes of the first round games. KenPom currently ranks the Cardinals at #51 and the Bulldogs at #43.

KenPom Rankings
  • Maryland: #41 (#50 AdjO, #41 AdjD; #258 AdjT)
  • Richmond: #62 (#34 AdjO, #112 AdjD; #225 AdjT)

I watched most of the 2nd half of Richmond and Hofstra tonight. I’ll tell you what I noticed… they didn’t play their C (Golden) for only 8 minutes and cower to the inferior team. They stuck to their game plan and wore them down and came back from double digits to win convincingly. Also, they can shoot. Unless they have an off night shooting, or the Terps have a good night shooting, above their benchmarks, I’m honestly expecting a L here Thanksgiving night.

ESPN is also expecting a Maryland loss. Their BPI gives Richmond a 59.6% chance of winning.

Ouch, that’s a tad surprising it’s that high. But they do have some shooters. Burton is shooting 53.3% from the field (65% from 3), Golden (their center) is shooting 65.3% from the field (46.2% from 3). As a team they shoot 46% and 39.8% from 3. If there’s a weakness, it’s their 61.6% FT%.

Sucks. Maybe they surprise and wake up. But with each passing game, becoming less convinced it’s a “wake up” thing. Once again, Turgeon with just the entirely wrong mindset. Talented roster, poor mindset from their coach. Ultimately, they’ll dance. But same as it ever was.

The line has now moved in Richmond’s direction before tip-off. Spiders are favored by 1.5 points.
