Maryland will play their third game in five days on Saturday afternoon when they host Vermont, who currently holds a 1-0 (0-0 America East) record after beating Northern Iowa on the road in their first game of the year. The Catamounts are the best team the Terrapins will play during this opening five-game home stretch before heading to the Bahamas over Thanksgiving weekend.

John Becker is in his 11th season leading Vermont's program, and they finished the 2020-21 season with a 10-5 (10-4) record and lost in the semifinals of the America East Tournament. He's led his team to three NCAA Tournament berths since 2011-12, and would have earned a fourth if the 2020 tournament hadn't been cancelled due to COVID-19.

You can only watch this game with a subscription to the Big Ten Network+ streaming service. Access to conference-wide games starts at $14.95/month but you can purchase access to Maryland's games for $9.95/month. This is the second and final game this season that the Terrapins will play exclusively on this service.

Maryland has stormed back, leading 29-28. Ayala had an altercation with a Vermont player in a tie up at the Vermont bench. Seems to have fired up the crowd and the Maryland players.

Terps go to the half losing by 4. Defense is absolutely atrocious yet again, so they’ll likely lose this game IMO. Can’t keep playing with fire like this, Vermont plays well together and makes you pay for bad defense.

I think this teams upside is huge, but the defense needs to get a lot better. And I have faith that it will. That typically isn’t one of Turgeon’s issues. But a lot of new pieces in this their 3rd game.

I said don't overlook Vermont. MD only a 10 point favorite.

ESPN tracker says Wahab yet to have a board...

6 points, 4 boards, 2 blocks. But slow in transition which has cost the Terps a lot of points today.

Shungu with 20 of Vermont’s 36 points at the half. Of the 20, 9 are 3’s, the rest were practically uncontested layups. Again, defense has to be a LOT better. This would be a bad loss.

MD will win.  But 11 of 34 in the half... including 2 of 11 from 3.

Only 3 turnovers.  Did pull ahead on the boards 22-16.

You could make a case that MD has 14 usable players this year...

Ayala, Russell, Hart, Scott, Wahab

Martinez, Reese, Dziuba, Green, Graham, Cornish, Dockery, Wright, Revaz

You've got all the depth in the world to to just press / trap everywhere, and constantly bring in new bodies.  Use the pressing to create turnovers, get out in transition, and points from defense.

But Turgeon doesn't want that.  He wants 1/2 court sets.  He wants to slow tempo. He wants to focus on rebounding.

I'm not even saying he's wrong. He lknows more than I do, and his teams typically are good rebounding and defensively (per metrics).

But always poor tempo wise.  And one of the issues which happens is that they don't put up enough shots... and when 3's aren't falling, they have long lulls....

Would be so much easier for MD if they get some easier points in transition consistently.

Scott is 2 of 9, including 0 of 5 from 3.   He needs constant reminding to use his wide body to overpower guys inside.

Ayala 4 of 10.
