What a crazy offseason so far.

I guess all you have to do is create some uncertainty to get everyone to start moving. :)

What we are seeing here is Management is going to make the expanded 14 team playoff format a sticking point to the CBA negotiations…hence Texas, Detroit, Seattle, New York (Mets) making big splashes free agency.

Roch is quoting Heyman here:

We also were told again that a lockout seemed “inevitable.” MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweeted that talks “are going nowhere” and a lockout is coming Thursday.

Not a Heyman fan, but I suspect he is probably very right.

Hard to talk about the MLB baseball, without talking about the magic mud they use.

Stuff like this makes me so much less willing to care about pitchers using stuff to increase their spin rates.

So I generally like Maury's articles and I'm ok with the discussion of it, but this seems like a lot of nothing.

The League explained that they had a supply chain issue for the baseballs (informed the MLBPA) and those challenges are exhausted and they should have consistent runs for 2022.  That doesn't seem like an unreasonable explanation.

I guess I don't understand the perceived linkage between "MLB and the Betting industry".  So the theory would be that the betting outlets are demanding that certain baseballs are used in certain games or certain situations to consequent the betting outcomes to favor the industry over the people?

It would seem like there's so many factors in front of generating those results the ball itself couldn't possibly be the driver for the outcome.  The betting industry is largely self correcting, right? They have tremendous experience doing this.  It just seem like there could be enough bets on some set of seasonal results (because ALL of the changed baseballs are influencing some macro outcome) to move the needle on betting across the season.

Also, it's not a secret process.

I worked in an industry for years where we produced a critical product for a massive industry.  The production of that product is kind of crazy and has a number of variables that sometimes make it's production a challenge.  We loaded 100ks of pounds of this stuff into rail cars and other transportation medium to move to the plants.

I could never figure out why we didn't have the purchaser inspect the product and accept it before we loaded it.  On a number of occasions, the buyer rejected our product at their plant.  We had any number of controls for product quality (not perfect, but it's a challenging process).  The margins sucked so it was a big deal to have three train cars rejected after arriving at the plant.  The cars were sealed.  We weren't at the other end to validate their assessment.

My point is that having the Polar Bear make allegations about MLB and the ball and whatever perceived challenges he thinks there is is pretty simple to fix.  Just allow the MLBPA to have a seat or 2 on the Production Quality Team at Rawlings.  How hard is that.  Hire your own independent team, whoever.

I'm confident that MLB would rather not get beat up for issues like this.  Maybe they are running some nefarious game with the betting industry, but I'd guess that's ridiculous. Wouldn't players be much more influenceable inside of the game to generate betting outcomes?

There is a complexity to the manufacture of a baseball.  This isn't like pouring molten steel into a mold.  If you want a different ball, fine, but everything is going to have consequences.  Teams, Players, Fans should have a reasonable expectation of consistency for all of the pieces of the game.

A Player complaining that he hit 2 balls with "the same exit velocity and launch angle" and got 2 different results - and blaming the ball - suggests that player should wake up every day being thankful for Baseball because his opportunities to earn a living outside of Baseball may be limited.
