I'm going Astros in 6, with Verlander winning the MVP. Alvarez is the favorite (+650), but I think Verlander pitches twice and gives up less than 5 ER total.

The Phillies have come all the way back against the Astros in Game 1 tonight, taking a 6-5 lead in the 10th on a homerun by J.T. Realmuto. This is the fifth consecutive extra-inning postseason game between Philly and Houston, the last four taking place in Games 2 thru 5 in the 1980 NLCS.

This is Houston's first loss of the postseason. Now they suddenly find themselves in an almost must-win position on Saturday.

Houston is now 3-8 at home in the World Series going back to 2017.

Justin Verlander's World Series struggles continued tonight. Staked to a 5-0 lead after three innings, he exited after the fifth with the score tied at 5.

Among pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched in the Series, Verlander now ranks as the worst statistically. Over five different World Series with a total of eight starts, Verlander is 0-6 with a 6.07 ERA.

I'd love to find out about any stud Orioles pitchers who stink in the World Series.

I'd love to find out about any stud Orioles pitchers who stink in the World Series.

Interesting.

I did quick rundown on baseball reference.

Dave McNally pitched in four different World Series 4-2 2.34 ERA

Mike Cuellar (won a Cy Young award) pitched in three Word Series for the Orioles. 2-2 2.61 ERA. Fun fact Mike Cuellar was on the 1964 Cardinals roster but did not appear in the World Series.

Jim Palmer (multiple Cy Youngs all time Orioles stud pitcher)Appeared in six World Series 4-2 3.20 ERA.

Overall, pretty good stats on the surface.

I had forgotten about Verlander's struggles in the World Series.

Meant that it would be an improvement for the Orioles to realize that Means, for example, stinks in the World Series. Let's get there and find out!

I understood it, and yes.

Someone said they wouldn't want to play "Team [whoever it was]" in the WS right now....I would. I'd be in the WS.

While this is true, the Astros were also 3 pitches from being swept out of the Playoffs by the Mariners.

If the Brewers had won their final game of the season, Philly gets knocked out (I think that's right).

The teams spending the most money are watching the WS from home.

The Padres had 'that look', until they didn't.

The line between winning and losing is pretty thin.

Jose Altuve went 3-for-4 tonight in Houston's 5-2 win. That's a far cry from his 4-for-37 postseason performance entering Game 2 of the Series. If he can get things going offensively, Houston will become a much tougher out in the Series.

I had forgotten about Verlander's struggles in the World Series.

I honestly didn't think of Verlander's Series shortcomings until I came across it in a comments section for the Series. What makes it a trifle puzzling is that his numbers in both the ALDS (8-1 W-L, 3.08 ERA in 13 starts) and the ALCS (7-4 W-L, 3.01 ERA in 12 starts) are stellar.

After Dave McNally's first start against the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 1966 Series, his ERA stood at 7.71. He didn't last three innings, walking five and giving up two earned runs (the last runs the Dodgers would score in the entire Series). Needless to say, he did a little better after that.

Some other Orioles notables:

Mike Flanagan had a 3.32 Series ERA (in 19 IP), but it ballooned to 5.51 in three ALCS starts (one with Toronto).

Scott McGregor was the true postseason stud for the Orioles. In four Series starts, he was just 2-2, but posted a 2.12 ERA in 34 innings. He was just as good in the ALCS, going 1-1 with an 0.57 ERA in two starts.
