After a tight win on the road over Illinois last weekend, Maryland returns home to face Kent State on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flashes currently have a record of 1-2 (0-0) with a win over VMI and losses to Iowa and Texas A&M. They finished last season with a 3-1 (3-1) record in a shortened MAC schedule. Sean Lewis is in his fourth year as their head coach after spending the previous six seasons on Dino Babers' staffs at Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois, and Syracuse.

Kent State ran for nearly 500 yards and 7 touchdowns in their blowout win over VMI, making their rushing statistics a bit skewed. Their offense is led by an NFL Draft prospect in Dustin Crum, who has struggled so far against two Top 5 defenses. On paper, Maryland's offense shouldn't have much of a problem moving the ball on the Golden Flashes, but could have some problems if they allow Crum time in the pocket to use his big arm.

Kent State Rush Offense: 266.3 ypg (#9 in country)

Kent State Pass Offense: 166.3 ypg (#115 in country)

Kent State Rush Defense: 217.0 yapg (#117 in country)

Kent State Pass Defense: 216.7 yapg (#72 in country)

Maryland Rush Offense: 174.0 ypg (#59 in country)

Maryland Pass Offense: 343.0 ypg (#10 in country)

Maryland Rush Defense: 88.0 yapg (#25 in country)

Maryland Pass Defense: 180.7 yapg (#34 in country)

You have to admire the consistency in their defensive suckitude.

In all seriousness, I still think this is a team that MD cannot sleep on, as their offense is capable of doing enough for them to steal a victory. Getting the defense back to full strength would be nice, though from the sounds of it that might be wishful thinking in Banks' case.

Just one change to the depth chart this week, as CB Deonte Banks has been removed after having shoulder surgery last week. Tarheeb Still and Jakorian Bennett are still listed as the starting cornerbacks, with Still and Isaiah Hazel listed as co-starters at the nickel position. Mosiah Nasili-Kite is still listed as the starting 3-technique, which is a promising sign after he missed last week's game with a toe injury.

The captains for this week's game will be WR Carlos Carriere, DB Kenny Bennett, and DB Jordan Mosley.

Locksley confirms that Nasili-Kite will be available for this week's game.

Balt Sun: Maryland football’s defense needed to improve. Rising stars and impact freshmen are leading the way.

Good discipline by Maryland as KState dances on the LOS, before a punt.

First play of the second series is behind Demus (I think) deflected and picked.
