After beating Howard last weekend, Maryland embarks on their first road trip of the season on a short week up to Champaign, IL. The Fighting Illini are led by first-year head coach Bret Bielema, who's returned to the Big Ten after stints at Arkansas and as an assistant coach in the NFL. Despite beating Nebraska to start the year, they've struggled in their last two games and currently have a 1-2 (1-0) record with losses to UTSA and Virginia.

 

This is an important game for the Terps, who need to prove that they can take care of business against a lesser conference opponent on the road in primetime. With as poor as Illinois' defense has been against the pass so far this season, Taulia Tagovailoa and Maryland's pass-catchers have the potential for another big night.

Sounds like Illinois QB Brandon Peters could return from injury this week. Maryland is currently a 7-point favorite.

Bret Bielema announced today that Peters will start on Friday night. It'll be his first game action since their season-opener against Nebraska where he played 13 snaps before straining his shoulder.

Maryland's captains for this game will be WR Darryl Jones, OL Johari Branch, and DL Ami Finau.

 

The only changes to this week's depth chart are the additions of Peny Boone at backup RB and Demeioun Robinson at backup SAM.

The last two weeks have been ugly for Illinois, but it's a Big Ten team that has a Big Ten win, and they're at home.  

MD has no business overlooking them.   Get out early, and don't let Illinois stick around and think they have a chance.

Ahmed Ghafir reporting that CB Deonte Banks didn’t travel with the team and won’t play tonight. Locksley will address his status after the game. He’d been starting on the outside across from Tarheeb Still when the Terps are in nickel and dime formations. Expect an uptick in snaps for Kenny Bennett on the outside, and Isaiah Hazel in the slot.

Starting DL Mosiah Nasili-Kite also won’t play. Two big blows to Maryland’s defense.
