And surpassed, 39 to 38. Japan, the host country, finished with the third most gold medals, with 27. Overall, the US amassed 113 overall medals, while China finished with 88, and the ROC placed third, with 71. The US has won the most overall medals in each of the last seven Olympic Games, dating back to 1996. In 1992, the Unified Team, consisting of 12 of the 15 Soviet Union republics (including Russia), edged the Americans in medals, 112-108.
