If anyone has the Vice network, be sure to check out "The Dark Side of Football". I've DVR'd a few episodes and just watched the one about pain. We know the players go through some bad stuff but man, it's brutal.

Haven’t watched that one yet. But the first two were not that interesting. Maybe it’s supposed to be geared toward people who don’t follow football.

Dark Side of the Ring on the other hand works well because so much of wrestling is kept a secret, and usually revolves around some kind of tragedy. I’m sure this football one about pain killers, addiction, and the like, probably fits the “dark side” bill for once. Diva WRs like the first episode, not so much.

Thanks for the heads up on the WR episode, I'll skip it.

I knew the players had access to pain meds but one of the guys they interviewed said there was a "candy dish" in the middle of the locker room that was open to them. The teams and the league have no problem stringing guys out on painkillers but if they smoke a joint...the horror!! Ugh...

I have watched a few of the Dark side of the Ring, but not football yet.  Summer is a good time to catch up on shows like this.

It's definitely ass backwards.

On a bit of a tangent from this, I read a pretty interesting article in the Athletic recently about former (and current) pro athletes wading into the world of medicinal pyschedelics use as a sort of last ditch effort to treat addiction, depression, symptoms of CTE, etc from their playing days. And have apparently had success with this treatment.

I've been aware for a few years now that this was something being researched more by the scientific community, but it's interesting to see some of the big names and leagues starting to get behind it now. Mike Tyson is backing one of the companies trying to push more clinical studies.

Here's a link for anyone interested Cain Velasquez, Mike Tyson, other pro athletes leading 'psychedelic revolution' – The Athletic. It's long, but I thought it was really good, and seemed well researched. He talks with a number of athletes across various leagues, as well as some doctors and researchers (spoiler alert: Hopkins has a Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research).
