Are we excited to be in the epicenter of Brood X?!?

I remember them in '04, and '87...  and I'm so not excited.  Wish I was going to be anywhere else.

In '04, my wife Laura and I were at the airport going through security, and there was one on her and she started jumping around and garnering a lot of attention lol.

But...

“If you’re in a place where they were in 2004, there’s going to be a magical evening; right around sunset you are going to go out, and there will be hundreds of thousands of these things emerging from their crypts, marching in column,” Raupp said.

1987 seemed so distant in '04 but '04 seems so recent now. Sad face.

Haven't seen any yet, but I've seen a few of those emergence holes starting to pop up.

I am absolutely dreading this having a dog.

Did anyone have a dog in 2004 that remembers how they act? Will dogs try and eat all these cicadas?

Keep an eye out, this mid week warmup might get the ground temp to that magical 64 so we can see some ciadas.

Is this a regional thing only? I was 2 going in 3 in ‘87 so I don’t remember. I was living in Florida in ‘04, never saw them. My wife was living in the Midwest in ‘04, she’s never heard of this before.

Yea it’s mostly northeast I believe

After 17 years underground, trillions of cicadas are about to emerge in the United States.

Anyone seen one yet?

From what I've read they're thinking about 1 more week.  They're close but the weather is supposed to be coolish for a bit which may keep them underground a little longer.

I've got holes in my yard all over the place though

They emerge when the ground temperature reaches 64 degrees.  It was mid-May in 2004.  The thinking is a few days earlier this year mainly because winter in this area was not that severe.

I think you can kind of figure this based on how your dog reacts to other insects like bees, and flies.  If the dog actively goes after them then it will probably try to do the same with cicadas.  If he basically ignores other insects then the same.  Now cats are a different story.  This is like going to Disneyland for them!  I've seen cats literally jump 6 feet in the air to try to catch them.

Nothing here in New Market, MD.

We didn’t get any in 2004 either.

I think the ground is too hard up here for them.
I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

If listening to the sound of Cicadas is wrong then I don't want to be right.
