I went to the Alabama Shakes concert last night in Philly. It was a great show as they played all their songs plus some blues covers.

I know there was a thread on them at the foxhole and that's how I actually found out about them (thanks to CrimsonTribe I believe).

Anyone listen to them?

On to the story...

So it was general admission and the friend I was with decided that she wanted to work her way up toward the front right before the Shakes came on stage. I don't think it's right to do that but was convinced to follow her. After moving up a little, she got behind this big dude (tall and wide) and his girlfriend. So basically we moved up to get a worse view. She kept on poking him in the back to get his attention and eventually he turned around and I couldn't hear everything, but I believe she asked if she could move in front of him and he said no and then eventually she asked him if he could stand differently so she could see and he said no. She kept on touching him and trying to make her point to him and his gf but it basically just resulted in it getting heated and they started cursing at each other (I think my friend was the one who escalated it) and my friend called them fat and said some rather mean things to them. Then it was really awkward standing near them and my friend wouldn't just leave it alone, which made it worse. Eventually some people let us move over a bit so we weren't next to them. My friend would occasionally yell something at them, though. So yeah, a lot of unecessary drama.

Good times, otherwise.

Geez, I hate inconsiderate people at concerts. If you're completely blocking someone because you're so much taller, there's no reason at all not to let them stand in front of you.

Never heard of Alabama Shakes, and must have missed that thread. I'll have to queue them up on Spotify and give them a listen.

In his defense, he and his gf had stood in that spot for about an hour and a half before we made our way up to that spot behind him. Should he just stand all the way at the back? He wasn't super tall either, probably 6'3. She just happens to be about a foot shorter and I'm not tall either. But we had a perfectly fine view of the stage where we were originally before she decided we had to be closer.

So while yeah, he could have let us in front, in my opinion, we shouldn't have ever been in the position to ask for that. And my friend could have taken no much much better.

Yeah, check them out. Blues rock band from Alabama with a female singer/guitar player.

Well, I agree with not moving up like that when people have been waiting, that's annoying. But if I were waiting for a while, and a person much shorter than me were right behind me, I'd probably offer to have them stand in front of me without even being asked. I realize most people wouldn't do that, but there's no reason not to.

Alabama Shakes got me through my first hour of work this morning... I'm digging it. The female singer reminds me of Kings of Leon a bit for some reason.

Alabama Shakes is awesome. I really want to see them in concert (you'd think it would be easier for me), but I haven't been able to yet. They are playing at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater later this month with Neil Young's Crazyhorse, which would be AWESOME, but it's on a Thursday night (seriously?!) and I'm moving from Birmingham to a town in North Alabama (opposite direction) that week so I just can't make it. I'll see them eventually; not like they're going to stop playing shows in the state they are from/named after.

On a side note, I am going to see the Hold Steady in Birmingham next Wednesday and Grace Potter and the Avett Brothers at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater next Thursday so I have that going for me, which is nice.
