The Wildcats finished 2019 with a 3-9 (1-8) record, and enter their 15th season under head coach Pat Fitzgerald. 2017 was the first and only matchup between Maryland and Northwestern, a game the Wildcats won 37-21.

247Sports: Peyton Ramsey listed as Northwestern starting quarterback

https://247sports.co...ers--153262036/

Not a big surprise here, and Maryland fans should be plenty familiar with Ramsey from his time with Indiana. He went 2-1 against the Terps with the Hoosiers, winning the last two matchups. He gives Northwestern's offense a much-needed boost after Clemson transfer Hunter Johnson had a very underwhelming 2019 season behind center.

I'll have my full game preview up later this week.

Nice to see a Terp football game thread.  I was not sure we were going to get there this year.

Northwestern opens as 11-point favorites in this one, which seems...high.

Maryland just released their first depth chart of the season:

Depth-Chart.jpg

A few interesting things to note:

  • Jake Funk is listed as the sole starter at RB, but we'll see a lot of Isaiah Jacobs as well.
  • Brian Cobbs will start in the slot, but Rakim Jarrett should see plenty of time.
  • Tyler Baylor is the starting TE just months after moving over from the defensive line.
  • Oluwaseun Oluwatimi is nowhere to be seen, with JuCo transfer Ami Finau starting at NT.
  • Shaq Smith has moved inside to MIKE and is no longer starting.
  • There are co-starters everywhere in the secondary except SS, where Nick Cross starts.
  • Isaiah Jacobs will return kicks this season.

If I had to guess at all of the co-starter positions on defense:

  • DE: Rogers
  • DT: Okuayinonu
  • JACK: Nchami
  • WILL: Eley
  • FCB: Banks
  • FS: Richardson
  • BCB: K. Bennett

Locksley isn't publicly naming a starter at QB yet, but the decision was made on Sunday and the team has been informed. All signs seem to point to Tagovailoa, as has been the expectation for some time.

I can't believe Pat Fitzgerald has been HC at NW for 15 years now. It seems like just yesterday I was watching him play LB for the Wildcats team that stunned everyone and went to the Rose Bowl for the first time in....like, forever.

That DL depth chart....ugh. Very small and very little in the way of D-1 experience. Expect the Big Ten to steamroll that unit once again. As former O's Manager Dave Trembley once said, the cavalry (2021 DL recruits) cannot get here soon enough.

The good news is that the defensive line was even smaller last year. The starters averaged 280 lbs. in 2019, while they average 298 lbs. in 2020 (assuming Rogers and Okuayinonu start). The fact that Finau and Titi surpassed Oluwatimi on the depth chart after he started every game last season is also probably a sign of improvement. It's also a deeper unit this year.

They can't be much worse than they were last year, or so everyone hopes.

Feel like "lack of depth at the tight end position" has been a phrase that could've been written in every Maryland preview the last eight years lol

Looking over this game I think we lose by about 10.

Yep, also seeing that he had opted out for this season, which must have slipped past my radar.

That's the second piece I've read where someone insinuates that Tagovailoa is a more experienced QB than LeGendre. Are people confusing Taulia with his brother?

The only difference is that Tagovailoa played mop-up duty in 5 games last season as opposed to 3 games for LeGendre, therefore Taulia is now a sophomore while Lance is a redshirt-freshman. Are we really going to claim that somehow gives Tagovailoa a meaningful edge in experience?
