Looks like Boston is using an opener.

Akin is getting his first look at Fenway. That can be an eye opener for a left hander.

I have never understood this. They always talk about the "short LF wall" but in fact it was a foot deeper than our old Memorial Stadium. If anything the Green Monster prevents more balls from going out that would be home runs in lots of other places. To me this is like an old wives tale. Gets in peoples heads and they can't get past it even if the reality is something different.

I think for a young pitcher it can be intimidating. I also think it may be closer than advertised. I have been lucky enough to attend a few games there. I had seats on the third base side where it juts out and then over on the first base side, and the wall dominates your attention. I would imagine a young pitcher really feels it. A left hander. especially.

You still get lots of routine fly balls that aren't homers but still clang off the Monster and by the time you can field it, it's a double

Just as an example, here's a double from this year what I'm pretty sure is a routine fly out in every other stadium

JD Martinez has been awful this year. He weakly grounds out to end the inning.
