I need to watch more carefully, but this should have been his game. Hollywood should have been getting the attention, I think he would have been going up against the 4th or worst CB regularly for Cle to start the year. Should have been separating and getting open if he had the chance. I'll take a closer look.

The announcers got it right on that out at the goal line, too. That should be a catch, he needs to know the ball is coming in fast, both because of the route but also the time. He needs to get his head around, and he needs to sell the inside route. That's where the separation comes from there.

He's probably better served by a higher and deeper throw by Lamar there, but that's a catchable ball or at least one he should be maknig a better play on.

WRs aren't going to get 10+ looks a game in this offense. If he's not going to be ready when it comes to him, I just don't see it as a fit here. I'd rather be getting Duvernay those snaps already.

I agree with you 100%.  Duvernay is faster, probably will have better hands and with him on the other side of Hollywood, will create a huge fear factor in secondaries going forward.  I also think it's possible that Lamar just doesn't trust Boykin all that much and will always want to go elsewhere unless his check downs make him the last resort.  So far, his M.O. is to disappear for extended periods of time and I don't think it's any coincidence.

I don't sell Boykin because he is an A- run blocker that allows for those long run to take place by clearing out the second level.  He has some things to improve upon, but he made two catches in a break containment re-routes and understands how to get open.  I rather that sideline throw be a jump ball with him on a contested catch, or make it a true back shoulder fade or back shoulder dart pass.

Coaches need to understand and play to the strengths sometimes instead of playing to a tendency sheet.  Boykin has some rawness to his game, but I liked what I saw outside of one play.

This 100%.

Actually the big negative for this game for me was Roman. I hope he's keeping things in the cubbard, but we saw a lot of what we did last year. I hope to see new wrinkles continue to come out.

That being said, you don't need super complex passing routes if Lamar is dealing like he was yesterday.

I actually looked at the throw on the goal line on Lamar.  I thought Lamar had only 2 throws the entire game that were not on target.  The play for Boykin on the goal line was one of them.  He left it short and had Boykin caught it, I think he is touched down inside the one with the clock running with 9 seconds.  It would have been close to spike it at that point.

I watched the game a second time and I think Boykin was targetted 4 times and caught 3.  Two were plays where he worked back as Lamar was on the move.

Boykin has work to do but I thought he did pretty well yesterday

One other thing, The Ravens dominjated the Browns yesterday and I thought the game was over at 17-6.  I think at that point, it seemed like Lamar was trying to get everyone a few touches.

I would still like one more veteran receiver, but I like this group and think as the year goes on (hopefully), we will see them post some serious numbers.

I think Lamar is the guy who will make everyone better.

What on earth was Cleveland thinking with that fake punt, too? They let the game get away from them way too early...

They are built to ground and pound, keep games close, run time off the clock. That fake punt really put them out of all of that. If it wasn't for the Ricard play (Roman needs to start to go 4-5 wide on 4th down plays) they would have been done much sooner. We probably don't see Lamar in the 4th at all if they score a TD on that drive.

Two things:

#1, the Ravens saw that fake punt coming a mile away. I don't know who it was but a player pointed out some inconsistency and everybody shifted in the direction of where the play was going. You gotta call a time out at that point, right? I have no issue with CALLING for the fake punt because they probably thought the game was over if they didn't score there. But when they have you pegged, you gotta just punt it.

#2, my favorite play was the 25-ish yard pass to Andrews, where the secondary was all turned in the wrong direction, and Lamar just flung it right over their heads. I hope it's included in the All-22 because that was such a beautiful, well-placed pass.

The Duvernay screen was one of my favorite plays. Showed how you can use 2 TEs and a WR together to do some damage. There should be fake screen looks built on top of that with Duvernay baiting the coverage into the flat and Andrews on the wheel in the future after a fake block. Also, you can invert this play, run the screen to Andrews and run Duvernay on the wheel, too. Loved that they put that specific play on film.

I wonder if the Ravens have worked the full playbook or at least what is reasonable to use for a full season yet.  With practices so limited this training camp, I am sure their are still things to install.

Right, and perhaps Don can elaborate about how teams approach this, but my guess is that you're just practicing principles for these types of things and then apply them to various pacakges and personnel groupings.

So I hope there is more to come. But it was obvious from the first drive of the game, the Ravens don't no plan to deviate from the baseline of what worked for them last year and will force teams to continue to watch film from last year, have a game plan first and foremost to stop that, and then deviate from there. I'm on board for that plan. As long as they are willing to move away from it when necessary.

We were the only team to win by 20+ points. 32 to be exact. Not that there is too much of anything to read into that.

From The Ringer:

As NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal pointed out, Baltimore’s 107 yards on the ground represents the low mark of the Jackson era. The Ravens still scored 38 points.

Yeah if you want to know who the best team in teh regular season was last year, just go look at the point differentials. Our gap to the 2nd best team was better than all but 4 teams in the league.

Oh the early DVOA numbers...yeah they've got the Ravens at #1 on offense already. Oh yeah, and defense, too. https://twitter.com/...352168749367304

This circled to a few clubs yesterday.  Baker Mayfield might be benched and voices around their club of starting Case Keenum is growing stronger.

The Browns search for a QB goes on, now in their 23rd year.  Keenum is not the answer though.

He may be better than Mayfield though. If Stefanski goes full run game, ball control, Keenum is definitely a better game manager.

They have to stick with Mayfield for now. I still believe there is potential to be a solid NFL QB. Unless he's just completely mailed in the effort.

When you have to resort to Case Keenum, you know things are getting pretty bad.
