Torkelson is probably the best recent comp for stud prospect that just fell flat on his face.

Different timeline, since Torkelson came from college. Similar AAA numbers at 21 for both Tork and Mayo.  Torkelson got promoted to MLB to begin Age 22 and sucked then went down to AAA and struggled, whereas Mayo repeated AAA and raked and did so again to start his Age 23.

Tork is an interesting case. Assuming this start is real.

He's tall, right-handed, and a bad third baseman.

No offensive similarities as a prospect.  Mayo is 23 now.  When Minor was 23 he was at low-A.  Minor was never a prospect anyone should've been all that impressed with.  He raked at low-A but was very old.  He then put up mediocre numbers as an 24 y/o old AA player before getting called up.  Returned to AAA as an oldish prospect and was better, but nothing particularly impressive.

Mayo hit great everywhere and at a young age.  He's light years ahead of where Minor was as an offensive prospect.  Doesn't mean he'll make it, or even be better than Minor, but the pedigree is substantially different.

Thanks for the breakdown. I was in Virginia when Minor was in the minors, still within O's territory, but we didn't have nearly the depth of reporting, that's available locally. I just remember he was supposed to be The Man. I can remember some ST footage of kids rushing to get his autograph.

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Kjerstad was comparable. He was older but only because of his heart condition. He was a top 30 to 50 prospect before he was brought up, and has also done nothing but flounder.

Kjerstad isn't comparable. Mayo is a caliber prospect above him. And Stowers doesn't belong on that list you provided.

Stowers is the only guy who is actually proving to be a major leaguer. Maybe it won't last, but it's hard to argue with the results so far.

Frankly, I don't care about the prospect pedigree if they come up to the majors and suck. But, at least as far as how they were ranked, Mayo and Kjerstad were both in a similar spot.

Whatever. I'm also probably just frustrated because so many of the guys Elias has chosen to hold on to have proven so far to be wildly underwhelming.

ROFL. And Alcantara was back and his value was only going up too.

Would love to make a bet with anyone on Stowers (and I like and am rooting for the guy).

Oh the hype was huge around Minor. It's only in retrospect that I've realized how garbage that hype was. He didn't deserve it at all. Calvin Pickering and Matt Riley deserved the prospect hype. All of them ended up busting anyways.

Wasn't Riley the idiot with the "24k Arm" license plate or something?

Too bad he had a ten cent head.

Did Minor make a top 100 list. I dont think he did. But he was a basketball star at OU and had good minor league numbers and got the Os fans excited.

Its pretty remarkable how few prospects the Os drafted and developed from the 80s-00s

That 1999 draft should've set us up for a long time. They had 4 of the top 23 picks, 7 of the top 50. They ended up with Brian Roberts, Erik Bedard (6th round) and Larry Bigbie.

Keith Reed, Richard Stahl, Mike Paradis, Josh Cenate, and Scott Rice were all busts.

I guess all things considered you're pretty lucky to get a Brian Roberts and Erik Bedard from a single draft class.

Looking back Ryan Minor was actually #35 on Baseball America's 1998 top 100.

Hayden Penn didn’t have a big league name. Still the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on an Os message board

Results weren't good but I thought he looked a little better at the plate.  I don't know if he's ready to produce but I don't think he'd have another 2-30 or whatever it was last year if he had a longer stretch.

Does this mean Westburg is off the IL?

I thought I heard Westy was gonna do a quick rehab assignment. I know they said ONeill was going to Anaheim. But you'd think Carlson would be the move for ONeill

It’s for O’Neill. Was promised it won’t be long before he’s back.
