I don't have a problem with this pick. Its a position of need and if he can play an everyday MLB ss then it might be ok. But this pick does not seem to follow in the logic of going way underslot at pick #2. They could have gotten this guy no matter who they took with pick #2.

Unquestionably true.

This is possibly a second underslot pick, where they can save additional money over what they saved at #2.

Slot there is 2.37M.  Maybe he takes 2.25 for round numbers, but I'd guess he's pretty much full slot.

A lot of mocks had him and Foscue getting taken in the top 29, which I didn't really get.  Foscue actually went 14 to the Rangers, so there's that.

Yea, he definitely wasn’t a reach by any means.

Just not the guy who they should have taken imo.

But again, they could end up with 2-3 top guys today and all of that goes away.

Law on Westberg:

40. Jordan Westburg, SS, Mississippi State, Age: 21

Westburg could sneak into the first round to a team that thinks he might stay at shortstop and isn’t too concerned with his high swing-and-miss rates. Westburg is an above-average athlete, and has the arm for the left side of the infield, but doesn’t have the hands or quick feet of a typical big-league shortstop. At the plate, Westburg makes good quality contact, commensurate with his size and strength, but has a leak at the plate, leading to trouble recognizing pitch types and picking up changes in speed. He strikes out too often — 69 times last spring, 21 percent of his total plate appearances — and hasn’t hit for the kind of power that might balance out concerns about contact. There’s first-round interest in him despite these question marks, likely because of the possibility of a shortstop who can make hard contact.

I'm curious if they just move Westburg to 2B.

They like his athleticism and it feels like most comment that "he could stay at SS", but he'd likely get a grade bump up if he was at 2B.

If he could be a more athletic Jon Schoop profile, that would be interesting.

Servideo is the clearly (reports) better defender, so maybe you pair them up and let them advance together through the system.

I think you keep him at SS until he shows you he can’t play there.

Absolutely not to moving him to 2B while in the minors for any reason other than him showing he can't handle SS.

Of course you keep him at the more valuable position until he proves he can't play there. Not sure how he gets a grade bump by going to the lesser defensive position.

I assume dude is saying he'd be better defensively at 2B compared to other 2nd baseman than he would be at SS compared to other shortstops. And not saying that he would be a better overall graded/ranked prospect after the move.

The idea that they should be thinking about Servideo in this scenario just doesn’t make sense to me.

I would say it’s likely Servideo ends up the better defensive SS based on scouting reports but that doesn’t mean his bat will play..and it definitely doesn’t mean you move Westburg already.

The Orioles have drafted a lot of shortstops in the last 2 years. I'm assuming that's because they're the best athletes and could probably play anywhere in the infield, rather than they actually expect them all to stick at SS.

They're going to have to move someone around.

Adam Hall (2-60, 2017)

Mason McCoy (6-188, 2017)

Caydn Grenier (1-37, 2018)

Gunner Henderson (2-42, 2019) - probably moves to 3B

Joey Ortiz (4-108, 2019)

Darell Herniaz (5-138, 2019)

Westburg

Servideo

You're still going to have to make some choices, especially if they can one of the A-ball teams.  Bottom 5 guys aren't ready for AA and you have one-full-season league below that...and then short-season teams.

They have almost a year to sort it out.

Teams are going to have to make decisions quicker on players when they cut minor league teams.

If Frederick is gone, there is a problem, you are right about that.

Ortiz and Grenier likely don’t matter(ie, they become UTi guys)...Hernaiz is maybe going to Aberdeen but could repeat GCL for the time being.

McCoy goes to AAA.

My guess is they would move Henderson to third.

Would they move Hall to AA? My guess is yes.

I would guess Servideo will start in Aberdeen and Westburg will start in Delmarva.

I think the window for players to make their ascent to the majors will shrink.

I also think the amount of players who get a shot at Pro Ball will lessen.

Stockpile all of the athletic shortstops.

Granted, these SS prospects in the Orioles system aren't on par with what the Padres have/had, but they used first round picks on SS in back-to-back years even with Fernando Tatis Jr in the system and a 2-3 SS prospects worthy of looks as a major league backup/utility option.

They turned one of those SS prospects into Tommy Pham, a player that finally gives the lineup an OBP guy and some defense in the outfield that isn't Wil Myers, Franmil Reyes, or Hunter Renfroe.

I do not know anything about the kid, but Greiner was exactly what I thought of, when I saw the pick.

Grenier was abysmal in the Cape Cod League while Westburg seemed to improve his game there and that carried over into this spring.
