One other factor I always felt played a role in the athletic deptartment being underwater was the recession of 2008-09, the worst the country had seen in 80 years. I suppose there's no way to measure the impact it may have had vs other factors, but the timing of it, just as football and basketball hit bottom in terms of performance, had to affect things like ticket sales, donations and sponsorships.

It was a perfect storm of events, but I still don't think it excuses Yow for running such a bloated department that pumped too much of limited funds into non-revenue sports. The cynic in me still thinks she saw that as an easy path to collect a bonus when those teams won conference/national championships. It's a known fact that the more money you throw at a particular program, the more likely your chances of winning big....you just don't have to sink as much into the non-revenue sports.
