Been a fan of Simmons since the Page 2 days, really amazing that he's come this far. Self made, and now looking at a $200 million payday. Fantastic.
Great piece, Joe.

I recall the talk of Simmons' and Grantland not being able to generate much money.
Pretty funny, now.
I think ESPN was pretty behind the curve when it came to understanding how they could monetize podcasts. They're not alone in that, but Simmons not only proved that you can monetize that medium, it's super valuable, just like all content seems to be right now.
Hope Spotify doesn't eff up what the Ringer has built.

Can someone more tech savvy answer this? If Spotify acquired the ringer, will I not be able to download their podcasts on iTunes? Will I need a Spotify account which I think is a subscription?
I would assume that they would still be available widely, but there would be some kind of enhanced experience if you use Spotify, and probably even more with a subscription.

They've already done a few Spotify exclusive things, like the new podcast with Chris Ryan and Chuck Klosterman. I could see more things like that. Or episodes exclusive to Spotify, like they did with The Rewatchables on Luminary last year.
