District Sports Page: Business as usual as NHL and players squander goodwill of fans

http://districtsport...l-of-fans/10958

Unfortunately, the NHL isn’t a game. It’s a business. Fans don’t love the business of hockey. The business gets in the way of just playing the game. This work stoppage — this lockout — threatens the very revenue source both the owners and players need to survive. There are no winners with a work stoppage — not the owners, players or fans. Yet, here we are. Again.

Hockey will survive. The business of hockey just might not this time.

I wonder if the NHL will be able to complete a CBA and then sign a new one without a work stoppage ... sometime ... ever ...

It's sad, because hockey is pretty awesome. But $$ always get in the way.

I know I'm oversimplifying things, but I really think there should be a 50-50 split, because it's simple and makes sense. The leagues can't exist without players, but the players' skills are useless (on the market) without a league. There are overseas options for some, I suppose, but that doesn't solve the problem, and the USA/Canada is as good a place as any to make money in sports (unless you're playing soccer). It's never a smart idea to piss off one's customer base by squabbling over millions and millions of dollars folks pay to see them play.

I hear everyone talking about the NHL isn't going to survive this if they miss the season and it might take some time to come back. I think in the end though people will comeback.

The league will survive, but that doesn't mean it'll be as strong as it has been historically.

I think one of the biggest problems they've had is that the rapid expansion of the 90s has turned out bad. Some teams have done unexpectedly fine (Tampa Bay and Carolina are respectable). Some teams, in part because of horrid ownership (Atlanta) or general lack of interest (Phoenix) haven't done so well.

Perhaps if they'd expanded up to 24 teams and NOT added any more until they were sure that those 24 teams were financially stable, the league would be in much better shape today. Now they've got franchises that are struggling to succeed where they are located, and not a ton of options for viable relocation.

I'm not sure what to expect from this point on. General competence is not high on the list.

This sucks. Who knows how long this one will last, there's already been a few rumblings that it could be another entire season! Hopefully it doesn't come to that. I think there may be a push to try and get something done by the end of the calendar year so that they don't have to cancel the Winter Classic (really hope that isn't cancelled as I would love to see that game being played at The Big House) but that's just a guess.

I wonder if it is cancelled, whether they'll try to reschedule it for the Big House next year or pick a different venue?

If the NHL begins on New Years, I think you'll see the same type of anticipation for the Winter Classic, the NBA saw on Christmas this year!

ESPN: NHL preseason games canceled

The move to cancel games is also an indication that the start date of the NHL's regular-season schedule -- Oct. 11 -- is very much in jeopardy.

ESPN: NHL employees to take pay cuts

http://espn.go.com/n...y/_/id/8398463/

The NHL informed its office staffers Wednesday morning that they would be forced to take 20 percent pay cuts and would transition to a four-day workweek beginning Oct. 1, multiple sources confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said on TSN radio Wednesday that both he and Bettman would forego their entire salaries during the lockout.

Apparently the lockout does not apply to franchise relocation.

http://seattletimes....9_oilers25.html

The Edmonton Oilers confirmed that members of the NHL team's leadership group, including owner Daryl Katz and president Patrick LaForge, were in Seattle for meetings and attended Monday night's Seahawks game.

The Oilers, whose lease at Rexall Place runs out in 2014, have long been looking for a new arena deal but have yet to come to terms with Edmonton. The meetings in Seattle, according to the team's statement, provide the Oilers with options for relocation if a deal falls through.

This gets all the press, but the real deal breaker is that the owners are demanding another roll back of all current contracts. They are just trying to slide it through and saying publicly that it's the revenue sharing they have an issue with so they don't look so terrible.

ESPN: NHL, NHLPA make no progress

http://espn.go.com/n...rly-encouraging

The lack of common ground between the two factions has stretched the lockout into its third week and will all but certainly force the NHL to begin canceling regular-season games this week. The league has already canceled the entire preseason schedule, a costly endeavor that, according to Daly, significantly impacts the league's bottom line.

But with each leader having a previous Armageddon on their respective résumés -- Don Fehr and the 1994 baseball season versus Gary Bettman wiping out 2004-05 in the NHL -- no one knows how this ends.

Everything Gary Bettman and Don Fehr touch turns into crap. No one should be surprised if the worst-case scenario comes to pass.

ESPN: NHL cancels season's 1st two weeks

http://espn.go.com/n...-regular-season

Unable to work out how to split $3 billion in hockey-related revenues with the Players' Association, the NHL wiped out 82 games from Oct. 11 through Oct. 24 -- beginning with four next Thursday, which would have been the league's opening night.
