I'm taking my son to the Arsenal-Real Madrid game tomorrow night.  Game time is 7PM.  I'm already dreading the commute but he's excited at least.  It looks like there's parking around the stadium?  Anyone have any advice?

I've taken metro the few times I've gone.  But it's about a mile walk from the station to the stadium, so that's not great.  But the stadium lots looked really bad to get out of, because it looks like they were designed without taking pedestrians into account, so everybody walking out basically blocks all the exits.  I haven't been there for at least 5 years, though, so maybe things have improved.

Many thanks, Nigel - didn't know Metro was an option.  I'll take a look at that.

I’ve never been, but is parking semi close and taking an Uber an option?

Parking/Metro is a disaster. It's one of the top reasons why no one wants to go there (the team being awful doesn't help, and everything being 400% too expensive is another).

You have the same problem with the Metro walk, it's not really designed for that, so it's a long walk, it's slow, and THEN you have the trainwreck of a metro to deal with once you make it, which is twice as bad.

The lesser of the evils is probably forking over the $1,000 for a parking pass (not literal) and parking at the very outer rim of the spaces. It's a longer walk to the car after the game, but if you can get in the flow of traffic and get out of there quickly it's not bad (that or you have to leave a few minutes early and beat the rush). I don't know if they will direct the parking or not though, they started doing that a few years ago, and not letting you just park in those spaces closest to the exit anymore, it's really annoying.

Like McNulty said, the BEST way might just be to park at like Costco down the street and take an Uber, but I heard the Uber/taxi line was pretty rough there too.

Wish I had a better solution for you, but Snyder screwing up the Metro deal so it doesn't come all the way to the stadium, and wedging it in a horrible area combine for an awful travel experience.

Lucky for you, Arsenal sucks these days, and despite it being a friendly I'd expect Real to blow them out.  Stadium should empty before the final whistle  :-P

Many thanks all.  Yeah, I've heard that it's awful, but he's excited about it.  Not my idea of fun to fork out a bunch of money for crappy seats when a lot of the A-team players probably aren't even there (though I don't know that for sure), but I hope he'll enjoy it.

Uber sounds like a good idea, but I've never done it and honestly have no idea how the process even works.  I'm technologically pretty much an idiot and don't get into the city much anymore.

I'd try the Uber route honestly. We have a branch within a mile or so of FedEx Field. We don't monitor parking at all, and have coworkers/friends park there all the time and Uber over to the field. If you're interested in that, it's the Signal Financial FCU located at 9500 Medical Center Drive, Largo, MD 20774. Good luck. The Uber (or Lyft, which seems consistently cheaper) app's are super easy to use, I wouldn't be intimidated by that at all.

If you do go with Uber or Lyft, and honestly its so goddamn easy, be sure to google a promo code.  They usually comp the first ride up to $25 bucks.

I'm considering the Uber/Lyft idea.  2 stupid questions...

Is there a way to put that I'm more than 1 person (or does it matter)?

How do they find you after the game?  FedEx Field is a big place.

It automatically finds your GPS position from your phone.  You just push a button that you want a ride, and they'll come to you.  You type in the final destination when you order it, and it spits out an estimate at you so you know how much it costs, no matter how long it takes, detours, traffic etc.

All rides are designed to carry 3 people (4 if you squeeze in), but if you ever need more you'd request an Uber XL.  You'll have no problem with just 2.

Edit: The app will allow you to contact the driver via text/call and vice versa.  So the driver can't find you, they'll call.

The app also shows you a picture of the driver, their car, and the license plate, which are all helpful in identifying your car when it's crowded.

There are probably designated Uber pick up areas.

They do that for Ravens games (probably Os too).

Yea GD, id be shocked if after the game there aren’t stands where everyone that calls a ride waits. The app can direct you to where those are too. Park in Ricker’s lot and take a ride

So...

Got down to the stadium area/Arena Drive around 6:00.  Totally planned to go to Ricker's bank and Uber over.  While on Arena drive, we saw a lot of fans leaving a shopping center lot and walking towards the stadium, so I decided to try that.  Found a good spot, was walking out of the lot when I saw the big sign "Customer parking only, all violators will be towed, yadda yadda yadda".  By this point it was like 6:15 and I didn't want my boy to miss the kickoff.  There were so many people around and so much traffic that if I tried to leave it would've taken another half hour or so.

So I decided to risk it, and everything turned out fine.  We didn't get towed, lol, and actually it made it super easy for us to hop back on 95 and get out of there.  But I couldn't enjoy the game at all, I was worried the whole time about what am I going to do if I get back and my car's not there and I've got my son with me and AAAAAAAGGGHH!!  But it was fine and he absolutely loved it and can't wait to go see another one.  And the game itself was actually a great game, aside from the penalty kicks which were absolutely the most uninspired round of PKs I've ever seen.

So all in all, he loved it which was all that really matters.  But next time I'm parking in Ricker's lot so I don't need to worry so much.

Sincere thanks to all for the advice.
