Really tough for wrestling to exist in the age of social media.  I loved it back when I was a kid - mid to late 80's, early 90's WWF was awesome.  And I loved the nWo storyline in WCW in the late 90's.

But then, even if you knew it was fake, you still had a relative illusion of good vs. bad (or faces vs. heels as it were).  With social media, everyone knows what all the story lines are about, or that the guy who's being booked as a heel spent all day at the children's hospital signing autographs while the guy being booked as a face was getting busted for a DUI, and it just doesn't work as well.  I've tried to get back into it a few times and it never takes.

I liked it as a kid for a while.

I get douche chills whenever I see it now. I have friends who still watch it and go to Raw and Wrestlemania and I get douche chills for them.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

The audiences are in three groups:

1) Kids. They love the characters and normally aren't going to care about social media too much. They just want to see their favorite people go out there and perform. I don't think anything's changed here.

2) Fans who are big into social media. I think this is fine, IMO. You don't have to be a bad guy all of the time to come off as a bad guy on the show. Think of the worst people on TV. Joffrey, Stringer Bell, Adebisi, Matt Damon. You think those people are like that in real life? More than likely no.

Fans of the product still (I hope!) have the ability to parse between "very good characters" and "generally assholes." The Miz, for a good three years, was the biggest pure heel in WWE (his latest run, not his WWE Championship run), and he was not only the nicest person to meet, but was the first person to do literally any community outreach (that John Cena couldn't make it to). Sami Zayn...same guy.  I think that the blurring of real life vs characters makes it a -little- harder to grab new fans but ultimately the performances and character arcs are what win them over, if it happens.

3) "It's Still Real To Me, Dammit" people, which...look, don't cater to those mfs, ok?

It's fun. It's entertainment. Just like any sport, just like Pokemon Go, just like gambling, just like birdwatching. It's just a matter of who's into it or not.

My hot take: Wrestling is (for lack of a certain phrase I don't like to use any more) lame as shit.

I am hot and cold with it. I love the athleticism, the risk taking, characters and development that make a story good. A lot of it is very lame, especially WWE right now. But if you think the 1998 king of the ring hell in a cell match is lame, I don’t know what to tell you.

The trying to make it “sports” doesn’t sit well with me. And that’s where they seem to be now. Except Ronda Rousey last year rode the fence of going poorly, but it worked really well. She hung around all year, fought often.

“Draft”, lame. They don’t even do it right. They had the draft on two nights and both drafts had a “round 1”. I watched the first two weeks on Fox and it was unbearable. Trying to integrate the NFL pregame crew with the show. Cut to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman talking about something something Hulk Hogan for 30 seconds that they clearly taped during the commercial break of a game a week ago.

WWE always has tried to make ties into sport and Hollywood. Arguably the lowest point of WWE history was 1994-1995, Lawrence Taylor faced Bam Bam Bigelow in the Wrestlemania main event!!!! And LT won!!! You would think if you run WWE you would script your own guys to win, for credibility sake. Easily the worst main event in the businesses history.

It went up from that point when they got back to featuring their best wrestlers. But currently Having Tyson Fury jump over, whichever MMA guy challenged Lesnar, doing it in Saudi Arabia, which screw them...I’m out right now. Extremely lame.

I am in on AEW now because there is little to no backstage stuff, a couple promos but most of the show is just great wrestling, and the story is told in the ring. Cody cut one of the best promos I’ve ever seen last week, but it was like the only 5 minutes of talk on the show. The rest was just wrestling.

Sure, but that's kind of exactly what I'm saying.  It's hard to generate heel heat when everyone knows the guy isn't really a heel.  Back in the day, even if you knew it was fake, you could at least pretend for a few minutes that it wasn't.  Just about every WWE show I've watched the past few years, the crowds are completely dead.  The only ones who seem to make any noise at all are the smarks who just want to mess with the performers.  I just think it's tough to care who wins now that everyone is totally in on it.

Just my opinion on it, though.  I do still enjoy a good match every now and again.  Just not the same as it was.

I get that first part. The suspension of disbelief element has dwindled.

It's actually a lot like athletes having social media. You don't feel like these athletes are heroes, but a lot of people see them as these super-people, or entities, or whatever. I don't know how to put it. Suddenly, you find out more about their lives than you really needed to, and suddenly you find stuff you either really like or don't like. It deadens the experience a little bit, but moreso for guys that literally form themselves to be good/bad. Like, if Lamar Jackson was a total asshole on social media, that would hurt a -lot- of people.

To be fair, suspension of disbelief aside, I would strongly (STRONGLY) suggest NXT or AEW if you're trying to find hot crowds and turn-your-brain-off wrestling. They both are featured on Wednesdays so it's worth a shot one day, maybe?

Regular RoFo tenders > Spicy RoFo tenders

I do love the spicy tenders though and they are spicy. A lot of times spicy stuff isn't spicy but they are actually really spicy.
