39 '86 Atholton Raiders (19-5, 12-2) - Coach Jim Albert 🎖 >>> The Raiders won a county title in a very competitive 8 team league, with the defending county champion Oakland Mills, a Quinton Burton-led Hammond Golden Bears squad, a Barry Young-led Mt Hebron Vikings unit, and defending state champion Wilde Lake. 40 '14 Reservoir Gators (18-6, 16-3) - Coach Mike Coughlan >>> The Gators tied with the Scorpions for second in the county, going 16-3, a game behind Atholton, but both the Gators and Scorpions advanced further in the regionals, giving the latter pair the edge. The Gators did sweep the Scorpions, exacting revenge on a pair of heartbreaking losses to their counterparts a year earlier, pulling out a pair of thrillers over the regional finalist. The Gators won 12 straight, before losing to nationally ranked (#18 in USA Today) in the regional final. The Gators were led by several integral pieces of their Final 4 team of '13 - seniors Kyle Reilly and Aaron McDonald, and junior Seth Henry.

HoCo's Top 50 Boys Basketball Teams of All-Time (#41-50)

41 '91 Oakland Mills Scorpions (17-8, 11-3) - Coach Dave Appleby 🥉🎖 >>> This capped off 5 straight county championships for Dave Appleby's Scorpions, as the team from Kilimanjaro advanced to their 4th Final Four in 6 years. The Scorpions finished a game ahead of fellow state semifinalist Wilde Lake, and defending state runner-up Hammond. The Scorpions were led by HoCo POY Nettie Gant, who became just the fifth (now 1 of 7) player to average 20+ points and 5+ assists per game in a season.

42 '14 Oakland Mills Scorpions (20-5, 16-3) - Coach John Browne 🎖 >>> The Scorpions tied for 2nd in the county with Reservoir, at 16-3, a game back of Atholton. Both OM and Resi advanced to the regional final, while the Raiders were beat by Glenelg in the regional semifinals. The Scorpions beat Atholton in their only meeting, 78-71, and advanced to their fourth regional final in five years, before getting routed by Potomac, the eventual 2A state champion. The Scorpions 3 league losses consisted of 61-58 and 82-80 losses to Reservoir, and an overtime loss to Centennial.

43 '05 Centennial Eagles (20-4, 16-2) - Coach Jim Hill 🎖 >>> The Eagles won the county title, the 6th and final county title for Head Coach Jim Hill, who would finish his career on Centennial Lane two years later, but not after amassing 311 wins, then 3rd best all-time in HoCo, now 4th. The Eagles, who were eliminated in the regional semifinals, were led by a trio of All-County 1st teamers - post Chris Moore, guard Drew Seker, and guard Anthony Bogues. Moore ranks 3rd all-time in HoCo history in blocked shots, with 342.

44 '14 Atholton Raiders (20-4, 17-2) - Coach Jared Albert 🎖 >>> The Raiders won the county title, a game ahead of Oakland Mills and Reservoir. The rematch Resi in the sectional final never materialized, as the Raiders were stunned by Glenelg in the sectional semi, 61-54. The Raiders Michael Bernetti and Justin Ballmer were named 1st team All-County.

45 '71 Atholton Raiders (19-4, N/A) - Coach Frank Rhodes 🥈🎖 >>> These Raiders are likely the best team to come out of Howard County from 1950 through 1975, featuring a starting five of Vaughn Johnson, Duaine Harding, Eddy Hinkle, 6'7 Jeff Johnson, and Chris Siebert, arguably Rhodes most talented team in his 21 years, outside his '78 Wilde Lake team. The Raiders won its fifth straight county title, and finished ranked #6 in the final Baltimore Sun poll. The Raiders topped Thomas Johnson in the state semifinals, before getting trounced in the state title game by one of the best teams in the area, the '71 Fairmont Heights squad, who scored 120 in the state final.

46 '19 Oakland Mills Scorpions (19-6, 12-4) - Coach John Browne >>> The Scorpions finished second in the county, beating county champion in Atholton in their only meeting, on the road, and beat 3A state finalist Reservoir in their only meeting, at home. The Scorpions advanced to their 7th regional final in 10 years, after beating River Hill in the sectional final, 53-52. The Scorps lost to Thomas Stone on the road in the regional final, 60-51. The Scorpions were led by 2-time, 1st team All-County selection Daeshawn Eaton, who became just the sixth player in county history to score 1,000 points, grab 400 rebounds, and dish out 250 assists in his career.

47 '91 Wilde Lake Wildecats (18-7, 10-4) - Coach Paul Ellis 🥉>>> The 'Cats finished second in the county, a game behind fellow state semifinalist Oakland Mills. This was the first Final Four for the 'Cats without Hall of Famer Frank Rhodes at the helm. Coach Paul Ellis' 'Cats were led by Joey Guyton and Phil Cheneir, both 1st team All-County selections. This is one of six instances that Howard County placed two teams in the Final Four - '71 ATH/HOW, '80 MTH/OM, '82 HAM/ATH, '90 OM/HAM, '91 OM/WL, and '15 OM/CEN.

48 '98 Atholton Raiders(19-4, 16-2) - Coach Jim Albert 🎖 >>> The county champion Raiders finished 3 games ahead of second place Long Reach. The Raiders were upset by the Lightning in the regional quarterfinals. The Raiders were led by Brian Boykins, a two-time 1st team All-County selection, who scored 31 points in the playoff loss. Jason Allmond and James Penamon were named to the 2nd team.

49 '19 Atholton Raiders (19-3, 14-2) - Coach Jared Albert🎖 >>> The Raiders were county champios, 2 games of regional finalist Oakland Mills, and 3 games of state finalist Reservoir, before getting upset by hot-shooting Mt Hebron. The Raiders were also bounced in the first round the last time they won the county title, in '14. The Raiders returned their top 6 scorers of a year ago, including seniors Casey Parkins and Justin Oates, then added 6'3 junior Jordan Oates (Glenelg Country) and 6'5 Albert Jackson (Mt St Joe) off the transfer wire. 18 players have scored at least 1,000 points and grabbed at least 500 rebounds. In addition to the five above, Perry Young ranks 1st in rebounding, and 11th in scoring, while Rees (2nd, 22nd), Steenberge (22nd, 4th), Spurrier (12th, 18th), Biggs (18th, 20th), and Eric Breland (18th, 24th), rank among the top 25 on both lists.

Resi's Josh Odunowo is the only member of the '19 class to crack the top 25, at #25. If not for 14 rebounds in the state final game v Poly, Odunowo would not likely have cracked the list (needed 12 to tie Josh Gross LR at 538), nor if he hadn't grabbed 23 rebounds in the Gators regional final win over Northeast. Odunowo finishes 3rd all-time on the Gators rebounding list, behind only Reybold and Henry.

19 22.4 > Tony Boston (WL '86)
21 22.3 > Craig Valentine (WL '88)
22 22.0 > Barry Young (MTH '84)
22 22.0 > Coleman Scott (OM '88)
24 21.9 > Kyle Jefferson (HAM '91)
24 21.9 > Keonte Potts (CEN '12)

Barry Young is the only player in the county to average 25 points per game in two different seasons, and the only to average 20Young points per game in three different seasons. Young and Craig Valentine are the only players in county history to average 22 points per game in two different seasons. Aside from Young, Cliff Rees and Mike Hill are the only players in county history to average 19 points per game in three different seasons, while Leroy Scott, Irving Conwell, and Charlie Thomas are the only others in county history to average 17 points per game in three different seasons.

Ten players have averaged scoring 20 points per game in two different seasons in county history - Young, with 21.7 per game as a sophomore, 28.0 as a junior, and 27.8 as a senior, Valentine, averaging 22.3 his junior campaign, and 24.7 his senior campaign, Rees, with 21.7 per game as a junior, and 21.4 as a senior, Hill, with 22.8 per game his junior season, and 21.5 his senior season, Hill's teammate Conwell, with 20.4 as a junior, and 25.8 as a senior, Thomas, who averaged 20.2 as a junior, 23.2 as a senior. Quinton Burton, with 20.6 his junior campaign and 25.5 his senior campaign, Perry Young, with 20.6 his junior season, 25.7 his final season, Coleman Scott, averaging 20.7 in '88, 22.0 in '89, and Chris Baker, who averaged 20.7 as a junior, 21.5 as a senior. Two others just missed - Leroy Scott - 19.6 in '73, 21.8 in '74, and Murray Graves - 19.9 in '98, 19.7 in '99.

15 of the top 25 entries occurred in a 14 season period from '78 through '91, only 9 from the 28 seasons since. 58 players have produced 69 20 point seasons over the last 50 years. 29 of the 69 20 point seasons occurred during the 14 season period from '78-91 (2.1 per year), while 40 happened in the 8 years before and 28 since (1.1) per year.

Only 5 players have averaged 25 points per game in county history, only one who has done it in the last 23 years (Manns OM '12). There were 7 24 point campaigns in the 80's (P Young, B Young - 2, Burton, Valentine) and 90's (Conwell, A Breland OM), with just two since (Manns, Steenberge RH '02).

Several factors contribute to the downward trend of prolific scorers. One, many of the scoring greats of the 80's and 90's would likely playing at private school these days, where the separation between the top 10 private school teams in the area and the 12 county schools as far as competition goes, is far more pronounced than it was 20-40 years ago. Imagine Barry Young at DeMatha, Quinton Burton continuing Armatucci's early 80's run at Calvert Hall, or Conwell at Mt St Joe, or even St Frances in '96, teaming with Mark Karcher.

Two, with defenses a bit more athletic than those 30 years ago, and expansion leading to less dominant 1-2 punches, putting more attention on opponents primary scorers. Lastly, the three-point line has spread the scoring around, giving some players that may have scored a total of 18 field goals in a season without the three-point factor, to quadruple their point total by being a three-point threat, not available in the 80's, and not utilized like it is now, in the 90's.

Three of the top 25 entries come from the 1986 (B Young, Burton, Boston) and 2012 seasons (Manns, Stevenson, Potts) each. Both Manns and Stevenson were senior tranfers, the former from Digital Harbor, Stevenson from Mt St Joe. The years of 1989 (Valentine, Scott, Ray Peele and Brian Parker ATH) and 1991 ((Kyle Jefferson, Jermaine Reynolds, Alec Sutton HOW, Nettie Gant) are the only two seasons that featured 4 20 point scorers in the county, while '89 also added a 19.5 per game scorer (Woody Nicholson). 26 of the 69 20 point scorers have come from 2 of the 12 county schools, Oakland Mills and Mt Hebron, who post 13 each on the 20 point per list.

Remarkably, over the last 50 years, there have been only 4 back-to-back scoring champions in Howard County, all occurring in the 80's. Three were Mt Hebron Vikings - Perry Young in '80 and '81, Cliff Rees in '83 and '84, and Barry Young in '86 and '87, with Wilde Lake's Craig Valentine going back-to-back in '88 and '89. Meaning, there have been 30 different scoring champions over the last 30 years.

Longevity plays a big part of the 1,000 point scorer. All but 2 of the 41 - Anthony Breland and Coleman Scott; were either (at least) 3-year starters or 3-year rotation players. 24 of the 41 played in (at least) a part of 4 regular seasons. 16 of the 41 1,000 point scorers never averaged 20 points per game in a season, while 8 of those 16 never averaged 18 per game in their careers. 25 of the 58 players that have averaged 20 points per game in a season have scored 1,000 career points, while 33 have not.

8 14.8 > Al Moraz (HAM 90)
9 14.7 > Duaine Harding (ATH '72)
10 14.6 > Chris Dixon (HAM '89)

11 14.2 > Perry Young (MTH '80)
12 13.9 > Josh Odunowo (RES '19)
13 13.8 > Barry Young (MTH '87)
14 13.6 > Duaine Harding (ATH '71)
15 13.2 > Mike McClarin (G '73)
16 13.0 > Gary Lambeck (OM '80)
16 13.0 > Tony Boston (WL '86)
18 12.8 > Jermaine Reynolds (ATH '91)
18 12.8 > Deon Wingfield (WL '93)
20 12.6 > Marc Terry (OM '92)
20 12.6 > Carl Jackson (WL '95)
20 12.6 > Bill Reybold (RES '08)
23 12.3 > David Menusan ('89)
24 12.2 > Richard Dailey (WL 87)
25 12.1 > Coleman Scott (OM'88)

Kevin Steenberge is the only player in county history to average 15 rebounds per game in two different seasons, while Perry Young is the only other player in county history to average at least 14 rebounds in two different seasons, and Duaine Harding is the only other to average 13+ in two seasons. Barry Young is the only player to average at least 11 rebounds in three seasons. Three players have averaged 12 rebounds per game in two seasons Steenberge, Perry Young, and Quinton Burton. Five others have averaged at least 11 rebounds in two seasons - Marc Terry, Charlie Thomas, Carl Jackson, and Darryl Webb.

14 players in county history have averaged 10 rebounds in two seasons - Steenberge (15.1 '01, 17.2 '02), Barry Young (11.2 '85, 11.4 '86, 13.8 '87), Perry Young (14.2 '80, 15.2 '81), Burton (11.9 '85, 15.6 '86), Harding (13.6 '71, 14.7 '72), Terry (12.6 '92, 11.3 '93), Thomas (11.3 '14, 11.2 '15), Jackson (12.6 '95, 11.8 '96), Webb (11.5 '05, 11.6 '06),, Leroy Scott (18.0 '73, 10.4 '74), Coleman Scott (12.1 '88, 10.7 '89), Josh Gross (10.5 '00, 10.2 '01), Bill Reybold (10.4 '07, 12.6 '08), and Obi Okwouama LR (10.5 '07, 10.5 '08). Tre Morgan just missed the list, averaging 9.9 rebounds per game his sophomore season in '16, 10.5 his junior campaign, before an injury severely hampered Morgan's chance to join Barry Young as the only two players to average at least 9.9 rebounds per game in three different seasons.

Only Perry Young (25.7/15.2 '81) and Quinton Burton (25.5/15.6 '86) have put together 25 and 15 seasons, though Steenberge came just short (24.8/17.2 '02). Barry Young (27.8/13.8 '87), Tony Boston 22.4/13.0 '86), and Mike McClarin G 20.1/13.2 '73), join that trio as the only six in the 20/13 club. Jermaine Reynolds (21./12.8 '91), Bill Reybold (21.3/12.6 '08), and Coleman Scott (22.0/12.1 '88) round out the 20/12 club.

Like the collossal individual scoring numbers, the monster rebounding numbers are on a downward slide, overall. 22 players have produced 24 12 rebound per game seasons over the last 50 years in Howard County, with just 3 players producing a dozen rebounds per game over the last 23 seasons - Steenberge, who did it twice, Reybold in '08, and Odunowo in '19.

Odunowo's mark of 13.9 boards per game in '19 was the highest mark in the county in 17 seasons, since Steenberge set the county mark with 17.2 in '02. Of the 44 11 rebounds per game seasons in county history, only 13 have occurred over the last 23 seasons, with 31 in the previous 24 seasons. Of the 64 10.5 rebound seasons, 23 in the last 23 years, after 41 instances in the 24 years prior.

Like scoring, there are a few factors that define the decline in rebounding machines seen 25-45 years ago. One, like the extinction of the prolific scorers, the private school route has decimated the number of powerful post players in the county. Secondly, teams are more efficient offensively, in general, limiting rebounding chances. Thirdly, the introduction of the three-point play has provided more long caroms, cutting the amount of rebounds in the 'constricted' area, and providing non-post players more chances at rebounds, spreading the rebound love around. [This can be seen in the NBA, in many of LBJ and Westbrook's triple-doubles]. Finally, the stretch-four (Stretch-five, can I get an Amen?) has many 6'2-6'7 dudes playing 18 feet from the basket, spreading the rebounding love with the 5'11 guy, even more.

There have been just 6 players to lead the county in rebounding in Howard County in two seasons over the last 50 years - Perry Young ('80-81) Burton ('85-86), Jackson ('95-96), Steenberge ('01-02), Darryl Webb (LR '05-06), and Thomas ('14-15).

Top 15 Howard County Season 3PM Leaders of All-Time

1 79 > Brandon Prox (MTH '18)
2 69 > Aria Amelia (RES '19)
3 66 > Kurtis Jestes (MTH '94)
3 66 > Brandon Willis (HAM '16)
5 64 > Steve Lombardozi (ATH '07)
6 63 > Arjun Patel (MR '12)
7 61 > Giovanni Williams (OM '09)
7 61 > Judge Payne (RES '17)
9 58 > JJ Marchany (G '03)
10 57 > John Mierwza (RES '15)
10 57 > Mark Smith (MTH '15)
10 57 > Chris Currie (G '17)
13 56 > Matt Hammert (G '15)
14 55 > Robert Gordon (HAM '18)
15 54 > Robert Davis (MR '13)

Only four players have drained 50+ three-pointers in two different seasons, including a pair in the 60/50 club - Kurtis Jestes ('93 53, '94 66) and Judge Payne ('16 51, '17 61), along with Mike Smelkinson ('03 50 '04 51) and Mark Hammert ('14 56, '15 52). Robert Davis just missed the list, hitting 54 from beyond the arc his junior season, 49 his senior campaign. Jestes mark stood for 22 years before getting matched in '16, and 24 years before being broken by fellow Viking Prox.

11 in the top 15 entries on this list has occurred over the last eight seasons, 12 of the 15 over the last 11 seasons, and 13 of the 15 over the last 13 seasons, leaving just two players on the list that made at least 54 three-pointers from '88 through '06, the first 19 years of its everlasting impact. The top two marks come from the last two seasons, and three of the top four over the last 4 seasons. Reservoir sophomore Aria Amelia hit 69 from downtown this past season, and has a legitimate chance to break a school career 3PM mark nest season (needs 44), and a county record his senior campaign (needs 121).

There have been 20 players that have produced 50 3PM seasons, 16 of them posted in the last decade. Only two players have averaged scoring at least 20 points per game, with 50 3P in the same season - Kurtis Jestes (MTH '94 21.5/66) and Giovanni Williams (OM '09 21.1/61). Two others came up just short - Antonio Manns (OM '12 26.9/48) and Robert Davis (MR '14 21.6/49). Only two others have averaged at least 18 points per game and make 50 3PM in a season, both doing it in 2016 - Brandon Willis (HAM 18.9/66) and Naquan Williams-Day (OM 18.8/53). Two players have averaged 5 assists per game and drain 50 3PM in a season - Mike Smelkinson, twice, and Steve Lombardozzi.

Top 15 Howard County Season Blocked Shots Averages of All-Time

1 7.8 > Chris Moore (HOW '06)
2 7.5 > Kevin Steenberge (RH '02)
3 6.9 > Kevin Steenberge (RH '01)
4 5.4 > Carl Jackson (WL '95)
5 5.2 > Coleman Scott (OM '89)
6 5.1 > Carl Jackson (WL '96)
6 5.1 > Chris Moore (CEN '05)
8 5.0 > Barry Young (MTH (87)
9 4.8 > Quinton Burton (HAM '86)
9 4.8 > Seth Felt (CEN '88)
11 4.5 > Obi Okwouama (LR '08)
12 4.4 > Coleman Scott (OM '88)
12 4.4 > Greg Whittington (OM '11)
12 4.4 > Josh Odunowo (RES '18)
12 4.4 > Josh Odunowo (RES '19)

Kevin Steenberge is the only player in county history to average 6 blocked shots per game in two seasons, coming a tenth of a percentage point from averaging 7 blocks per game. Chris Moore and Carl Jackson are the only other two to average at least 5 blocked shots per game in two seasons.

Reservoir's Josh Odunowo put together a pair of 4.4 blocked shots per game seasons in '18 and '19, matching Greg Whittington's mark in 2012 for the best average over the last decade. Odunowo joins Steenberge, Moore, Jackson, and Coleman Scott as the only five players in county history to average 4.4 blocks per game in two seasons.

Two of the better coaches in Howard County history won't be around when 2020 comes in, as Centennial's Chad Hollowedel announced his retirement after 12 years as the Eagles head coach, and 22 years with the program, and Reservoir and Mike Coughlan parted ways after 7 years together in Fulton. Hollowedel now gets to see his son Ryan continue his basketball career at Hood College, while Coughlan gets to watch his nephew Shane at Centennial for the next two years. Shane's brother Sean played for Hollowedel for two years, and was the Eagles leading scorer in 2018..

Hollowedel and Coughlan both rank among the top 5 in county history in win percentage, with Hollowedel 5th, at .645, and Coughlan 4th all-time, at .646. The two produced 5 of the county's 7 Final Four appearances over the last decade.

Hollowedel led the Eagles to the 2015 3A state title, with two other Final Four appearances, going back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. His 2015 Eagles went 18-1 in county play, and 25-2 overall. For Hollowedel, 2019 was his 10th straight winning season, matching Chuck Monninger as the longest such streak in county history. Hollowedel produced three 20+-win seasons, six 17+-win seasons, and eight 16+-win seasons. In addition to ranking 5th all-time in county history in win percentage (.645), Hollowedel ranks 8th all-time in county history in wins, with 193. Hollowedel is just one of four coaches in county history to win at least 3 regional championships, along with Dave Appleby, Rhodes, and Monninger. Hollowedel's .686 (24-11) playoff win percentage ranks tops in county history.

Coughlan led the Gators to the state title game in 2019, 6 years after leading the Gators to their first Final Four appearance in school history in 2013, in his first season in Fulton. A year before, he led Marriotts Ridge (18-6) to its best season in school history in his one year at 'Rowdy Ridge'. At 'Resi', Coughlan turned around a program that ranked 12th of 12 teams in its first 9 years of existence, winning 34.7% of its games, to winning better than 63% of its games over Coughlan's 7 years in Fulton, an 82% improvement. Coughlan ranks 4th all-time in county history in win percentage, trailing only Oakland Mills current coach John Browne, former Atholton and Wilde Lake Hall of Fame Coach Frank Rhodes, and Long Reach's Al Moraz Sr.

Browne, the second longest tenured coach in the county, with 14 years, second to River Hill's Matt Graves 15 years in Clarksville, is 6 wins away from tying Paul Ellis for 5th all-time in county history in wins. Browne's .690 win percentage ranks tops all-time in county history (min. 125 games). Graves, who ranks 7th in wins and 8th in win percentage in county history, was the 7th coach in county history to win 200 games. Browne became the 6th in December, 2017. Graves predecessor, Brian Van Deusen, has the county's 2nd best win percentage (.692) among county coaches, with a 100 game minimum (81-36).

This is a great read. I can't imagine the time it must take to compile these statistics.   Now when can we expect the same for HOCO football? :-P

I appreciate it, thank you. I'll do football in August. I have all the stats, top 50 teams, etc., just need to put it all together and double-check/proofread.
