So maybe this ends up having adverse impacts? The rule is to urge teams to not keep players in the minors to max out their period of control. Maybe teams see this and just decide to hold players back long enough that they won't get consideration for ROY because they didnt' get enough playing time yet exceed the max # of at bats so they aren't considered a rookie in the next season.

Maybe this doesn't transpire but this sure didn't help the O's losing a year of control. No matter how you slice it its going to cost them. Lose a year or give him an extension that is more costly.

No, don't think it will. This rule and the compensation rule will definitely get players up sooner on average. The compensation rule entices teams to call guys up. This rule neutralizes the benefit for holding them down a few weeks to a couple months.

Yeah, we're already seeing this with Gunnar.  The O's clearly wanted him to keep his rookie status for 2023 so they can have him on the OD roster and try to get a draft pick next year.

Just like Antonio Brown. Frostbite.

If he shows up at Sarasota in February on a hot air balloon, Elias needs to get trade discussions rolling, pronto.

Balt Sun: Orioles star Adley Rutschman is expected to be one of the best in baseball. The pressure is ‘more exciting than anything.’

New statcast stat just dropped. Adley led MLB in blocking with +18 blocks above average. Article also pointed out that Severino was 122 out of 122 qualified catchers from 2020-22, so they literally went from worst to best.

Ain't happening IMO.  Enjoy him while he's here.  John "Tampa Bay" Angelos is already finding the excuses as to why we can't extend him.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Hopefully Adley can outlast John Angelos with the Orioles.

The time to do it was before last season began.  I think its already too late.

I have more hope for Rutschman than Henderson, just because his agent isn't Boras, but that's not to say I have much hope for getting Adley done.  His position also makes it tough.  Right now he'll hit FA at 30 and may be able to get a huge deal even as a catcher who'll be staring down an imminent position change.  But out 2-3 FA years and then he's 33 and he may just be a solid 1B rather than a HOF level catcher.  There is risk for him in not signing, but a pretty clear path to see how not extending is his ticket to more overall career earnings.

John pretty much laid the groundwork yesterday for the expectation he'll be in pinstripes or Dodger blue in 2028. I'll bet it was no coincidence he did it right after Adley went 5-for-5. Can't let fans sit back and enjoy it for even a day.

The self-inflicted injuries he incurs whenever he opens his mouth. Frankly it's sort of fascinating.

Some stats regarding Adley throwing...

So far this year MLB as a whole is 1472/1855 in SB, which is 79.4% success rate and 0.90 attempts per game per team if I did the math correctly.

Last year teams stole much less often and a little less successfully.  2486/3297, which is 75.4% but only about 0.67 attempts per game per team.

Rutschman this year has allowed 31/40 stolen bases, which is 77.5% success rate and about 0.84 attempts per game (I assumed his 4 games caught off the bench to count as an extra half GS).

Last year he allowed 25/36 stolen bases, which is 69.4% success rate and about 0.42 attempts per game (I assumed his 9 games caught off the bench to count as an extra full GS).

So if we made up a Caught Stealing Plus and a Attempted SB Plus stat where league average is the denominator, i.e below 100 is better than average...last year Rutschman was 92 CS+ (~8% better than average) and 63 ASB+ (~37% better than average).  This year Rutschman is 98 CS+ (~2% better than average) and 93 ASB+ (~7% better than average).
