Rio Ruiz

Hopefully he is good to go in the Marlin series. His late season surge from last year, and his spring success seems to have carried over.

He's obviously slumped badly, but perhaps that shoulder problem was the cause? I'm still a believer in Ruiz (not because he made his name sound like mine). He put in the work to improve physically, and he's a talented defensive 3Bman. I still think he can turn things around offensively.

He's got 3 weeks to do something. At this point, I'll be dissapointed if he's essentially handed the starting '21 gig. Or even the strong side of a platoon for that matter.
Yeah I think he has until June of next year before Vavra or Bannon takes his spot.

I don't see any initiative, incentive, willingness or desire to do anything different at 3B.
Again, how many years does it take to 'know' something? Even if he OPS'd .850 next year, would the Orioles commit to him and extend him as an .850+ hitter?

They certainly wouldn't need to extend him. But if he gets another chance in 2021 and has an 850 OPS then he's your guy for 2022.
There is ample middle ground between "lock up with a long extension" and "release". I think Rio is currently much closer to the "release" side of things. I'd like to find a better option for 3B if we can.

Contracts Extensions are a statement of confidence about a player being part of the team moving forward.
I agree we should do better at 3B...either in creating win now opportunity or creating opportunity for the future.
I think Rio is neither....yet he's going to keep playing 3B.
--------
Again, if the Orioles had a locked up lineup and you wanted a reasonable guy to bat 8th and play good defense, fine.
Rio would be better than what both the Brewers and Nationals are currently planning on running out there in 2021. The Brewers won't have a lot of good options. The Nationals, I'd guess, have more flexibility to pursue more interesting options.

Extensions are statements of confidence about the future for player and team.
Contracts for now, are about now.

I don't really care about the distinction in that point (contextually it should be clear it was about contracts more than the current year), but I guess I change my statement.

Maybe the Franco rumors light a fire under Ruiz, but I suspect what we have seen is what he is.

Wow, I'm pretty flabbergasted that another MLB team wants him. Good luck, Rio!
