Orioles claimed 3B Ruiz off waivers from the Braves during the Winter Meetings. Elias and the Astros drafted him in the fourth round of the 2012 draft.

Ruiz had a strong game at 3rd today.  Looks very solid defensively.   Nice double to left as well.

Ruiz is a guy that I think the O's really hit the jackpot on.

He has a good batting eye and patience in general - his big limitations are that he doesn't really create launch angle, and he's not aggressive enough in the zone.

I realize his numbers haven't really manifested, but he is the kind of player that makes me think of Justin Turner.  The kind of player that's just looking for a tweak or two to really unlock his potential.

Ruiz has certainly gone cold. He had his OPS over .700 on May 20th.  Down to .622 currently, after a .511 OPS in June (62 ab's).

Ruiz has had a lot of good ab's this year though imo, good approach. Sprays liners when going right. Do question if he can hit enough overall though. Plays a very solid 3rd.

Apparently it has something to do with getting him back east with his wife expecting to give birth any day.

Ruiz was having a great spring.  He looked noticeably stronger and was driving the ball to left field.  It would have been nice to see if that carried over into the regular season.

I'd guess Elias has a significant bias to Ruiz, in the same way MacPhail was biased to Felix Pie.

Ruiz was maybe his biggest play as a draftee.  The used some savings from Correa in 2012 to sign McCullers Jr as a 1S pick and they gave Ruiz 1.85M as a 4th round pick to talk him out of his USC commitment.

He's sitting at 1.109 for service and this year they had one of the lowest Super 2 cutoffs at 2.115 so he's unlikely to be a Super 2 next year if everyone basically gets a year of service.  He's just miss, like some guys like Matt Chapman did this year.

At 25, he's got 600 PAs over 4 season with the biggest opportunity coming last year and an OPS under .700.  An 81 OPS+ isn't going to get it done.

It doesn't look like the Orioles have any 3B options prior to Gunner Henderson who is 3-4 years out..

Good glove, better pop in the 2nd half last year after rejoining the roster.

Had a lot of good ab's, approach wise.  Hit just .232, but I think he could put up a solid average.

With Mancini missing '20, Nunez figures to get plenty of DH ab's... and not see any / much time at 3rd.  (I think it's possible Nunez could have got some look at 3rd during '20 over a full 162 games if Ruiz didn't show improvement bat wise, and Mancini was healthy.)

That means Ruiz is likely to get a lot of starts and opportunities again in '20.

He either shows progression or he doesn't.  With some progression, you could envision him being a placeholder for another year or two.

Do think Alberto's best defensive position is 3rd, but with the roster as is, Alberto would be playing daily at 2nd.

Yea, imo with this season being what it is and the Orioles being what they are, no reason not to see if Ruiz can build some momentum.

Ruiz debuted the long-hair, and launched the Orioles 1st homer of the year on Opening Day.

Since being recalled last year, he is showing a lot more power. Combine that with a good walk rate and his normal solid defense and you have the potential for him to become something useful for a little while.

His BA will be key though. He is hitting in the low 200s since he got brought back up. His BABiP is terrible but it even when it was almost 300 in the first half of last year, he still only hit in the 230s.

If he can get his BA into the 250-260 range, he could become a regular for a few years.

It’s a SSS of at bats since he was brought back up, so we have to see but at least there are some signs.

Ruiz plays a good third base so that works in his favor.   I believe if he can drive the ball to left field, like he has occasionally shown, he can hit .260.  If he traded that off, to hit the long ball, then he is always going to be a bench player.
