Apparently the Red Sox successfully shifted an OF’er on Joey Gallo yesterday. Guess they didn’t address this explicitly enough with the rule change.

4 in the OF with the 4th playing short right like in softball.

Yeah, so as it turns out, the shift wasn’t banned.

Lol. Baseball would f up a rule change. So essentially it has to be a player labled as an OF and he can play the "rover" position. Thats literally the same thing except its not an official infielder. MLB is so stupid.

If its something different let me know. Maybe it has nothing to do with how you are labled on the roster. I havent seen the shift on Gallo in question here

Im assuming they vacated 3b and moved him to the OF deep position and moved the "OF" up into essentially where the deep shifted infielders were playing him in shallow RF. So the only difference is its an OF fielding the balls instead of an infielder. Lets make sure we get Vavra and Norby and maybe others the reps im the OF and call them OFers

So vacated LF. Prob a little more dangerous on most hitters. Gallo must be heavy pull on flyballs too. Listen, it doesnt change what a lot of us have said. The hitters need to adjust too. You dont have to be so pull happy.

Leave it to MLB to eff up a rule change. If you’re going to have a shift ban in place, that alignment needs to be illegal.

Otherwise, don’t make the change.

With the short LF/green monster, it might make a lot of sense for Boston to employ that kind of shift.

Or flick the ball into LF and run for days and days.

The Athletic: MLB could tweak new rules before Opening Day

Paywalled, but no word on exactly what tweaks the competition committee might consider. Per the article, players and the union have brought up these concerns:

  • That the 15-second pitch timer is too constricting with no one on base.
  • That hitters should get slightly more time and shouldn’t need to be in the box and “alert to the pitcher” with eight seconds left on the timer.
  • That players who are involved in a defensive play to end one half-inning should get extra time if they are leading off the next half-inning.
  • That hitters should be allowed more than one timeout per plate appearance.

First one, no.
Second one, make it ten then.
Third one, not if it’s an infielder. Outfielder wants 20 extra seconds, fine.
Fourth one, god no.

Yup. Good for them. Lets chill for the most part. Too drastic. Rein it in.

• New standards will be enforced for bat boys and bat girls, whose ability to quickly retrieve equipment will help efforts to speed up the game, according to the memo. The league will evaluate the performances of bat boys and bat girls and could ask teams to replace them if their performance is considered substandard.

Is this really a major area of delays in the game?  Seems kind of silly that they would single out bat boy/girls as an area where they can speed up the game.

They need to fire about half their umpires, and switch to robo umps, before they start suggesting a team fires some coaches niece or nephew for being a few seconds slow.

I saw these rules helped shave off 26 minutes during ST.

This will come in handy especially vs Boston and NYY.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

The Devers pitch clock strikeout was pretty funny.
