With the scouting combine going on in Indianapolis, figured it's time for one of these threads. The Terps have 3 representatives at the combine:

  • OL Derwin Gray (40: 5.26)
  • DL Byron Cowart (40: 5.16)
  • DB Darnell Savage, Jr. (40: 4.36)

Savage is thought to be Maryland's top prospect, and should be off the board by the 3rd round at the latest. His impressive 40-time from today will certainly improve his already-rising draft stock. Gray and Cowart will likely be drafted late, if at all.

Notable players who weren't invited to the combine include RB Ty Johnson and LB Tre Watson. They'll join a few others at Maryland's Pro Day in the coming weeks.

How was Ty Johnson not invited?  At the very least he could be a good return specialist prospect.  He'll be picked up by someone.  His problem is his running style is pretty north and south, like Gus Edwards without the size.  However, he has the speed to take it to the house so I see him as a 3rd down option but mostly a kick return specialist.

Overshadowed by Anthony McFarland last season, so he ran for just 506 yds and missed 3 games due to injury. Also essentially racked up those yards in just 3 games (Bowling Green, Minnesota, Rutgers.) But averaging over 7 yards per carry in all but one of his 4 seasons will certainly get him a look, likely as an undrafted free agent.

Savage just ran a 4.36 official in his second attempt, so his stock is certainly rising.

Ty Johnson's calf injury limited him this season. A big reason  McFarland was able to shine the 2nd half of the season

was the lack of availability of Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison.....

Personally, I would have invited Damian Prince to the combine before Derwin Gray but the NFL is enamored with Gray's

body type for an interior lineman more so than Prince's who will both be guards at the next level.....

Ty Johnson is showing out at today's Pro Day. Sounds like he ran a 4.3 second 40 and his bench was extremely impressive. That 40 time would have been the best of any RB at the NFL Combine. John Harbaugh said he was looking for a shifty home-run hitter? Ty may be the best value pick RB in this year's draft.

So uh...I know I'm late to this party but I just watched Darnell Savage for the first time. Holy SHIT, you guys. Just...holy shit. I think I just found my annual "Brett falls deeply in love with a rangy free safety" candidate for 2019.

4.26, 4.32, 4.29, 4.34... Each stopwatch got something different, but found one truth. @T_Johns6 is the fastest back in the draft. #ProTerps

Johnson, Gray, Prince, Aniebonam, Watson and maybe Cowart could all help teams drafted or not.

Shame about the AAF. Would have been perfect for Gray and Prince.
