In Deadspin's story about the Big Game being postponed (another notable effect of the fires), the writer made the point that, no, it's not anywhere close to important in the grand scheme of lives (literally and figuratively) lost, but that it helps bring even more attention to what is going on out in California to people that may not be watching the news particularly closely.
