I remember back to draft day. the Wizards took an athlete, named Jan Vesely and the Pacers (I think) about 10 picks later took a basketball player, named Leonard. They then traded him to SA, and the Spurs have reaped the benefits since then. Some teams just do it right and others don't.
And the player they sent to Indiana was George Hill, an okay-but-by-no-means-great PG the Spurs drafted at #26 three years earlier. It's one example that goes to show how out of character it was when they threw the big money at Aldridge in free agency. Aside from being great when it comes to getting a lot out of role players that other teams throw away, the Spurs have been pretty successful at primarily using the draft to build their teams, despite always picking near the very end (some guy named Duncan notwithstanding). That's right, it's all about the draft pickz!
