My OBX vacation begins Saturday morning...ugh. Maybe they'll reopen the island on Monday or Tuesday.

Yeah, I'm going to go say with a high degree of confidence that the OBX will not be accepting any visitors for the foreseeable future.

Last time a hurricane hit and we were supposed to be there, they re-opened on Tuesday. That was Irene in 2011. That was only a Cat 1, so this is much stronger if it holds strength as a 3, but that one hit on the Saturday we were supposed to arrive, not 2-3 days earlier.
Looking into backup plans, but not completely giving up hope that we will be a complete OBX washout. Nobody knows where this thing is gonna go. The modeled possible paths are obviously intimidating, but it could turn north or south outside the projections (the big cone they show on the plots are only 66% likely to contain the center) and OBX would be very rainy but still existent and likely open to visitors.
We're not gonna do anything stupid, if we can't go, we can't go. Won't be the worst damage this storm does. But I'm not completely devoid of hope that we can salvage something.

I got some good friends on the NC coast.
Yeah...they're GTFO. You can't even comprehend staying at this point. Yikes.

Supposed to fly to Orlando at 6:15am tomorrow. I'm sure the airport will be a shit show. My wife set an alarm and checked us into our flight on southwest. Usually middle A-group. Yeah, we're B33. It's gonna be packed and busy and I'm sure flights are going to be all over the place.
Actually thought we would be gone during it if it makes landfall Friday. Supposed to fly back Monday, but it looks like it'll still be hanging around then.

Not sure if there was really good planning in place, or if travel wasn't a popular option given schools went back in session just a week ago. But we got to the airport at 3:45am for our 6:15 flight expecting the worst. Checked our flight status often and it was on time. But long term parking lots according to BWI's website was saying one lot full and the other at 90% capacity most of the day and night. Expected a ton of people.
To our surprise, apparently the airport doesn't even open until 4am. Lol. We stood there with maybe 10 other people waiting for the kiosks for checking bags to open. Saw TSA take their places before we went through security. It was odd.
Needless to say we were at our gate at 4:10am for a 6:15am flight I don't mind being early, but damn. I could have used another hour of sleep.
I know Southwest cancelled all fights in and out of Charlotte and Raleigh stating yesterday so plenty of people had time to adjust plans accordingly. But it wasn't crazy like I expected. Flight was full, but I leaned up against the window and slept almost the whole way.

Looks like the northern part of Outer Banks where we are staying is avoiding most of the damage. They are letting residents and employees back tomorrow at 7am and visitors Sunday at 7am. Assuming our house didn't sustain any serious damage, we'll be able to get in Sunday morning.
