It's definitely an overrated franchise. We agree about that.
I recently watched Rogue One for the second time and I enjoyed it more than I did the first time. BNick is right, it's a great change of pace film for the franchise. I disagree with it being overrated though.
As for my out of 10 rankings for each film, they'd go:
Empire Strikes Back 9/10
Rogue One 8/10
A New Hope 8/10
The Force Awakens 7/10
Return of the Jedi 7/10
Revenge of the Sith 6/10
The Last Jedi 6/10
The Phantom Menace 5/10
Attack of the Clones 4/10
Nailed that list.
At the end of the day, 7-9 is limited by its predecessors. You either retell the same story, which is now redundant. Or, you try to tell a new story, which will inevitably be incongruent with its predecessors. On top of all that, the powers that be are motivated by maximum broad appeal, as the primary goal is to make as much money as possible, not breaking new ground.
I had low expectations for 7, and enjoyed the experience. I had high expectations for 8 cause of Rian Johnson, and was disappointed. I'll go back to not expecting much from 9, and I'm sure it will be fun.
In the alternative world of having my druthers, the Star Wars universe is used as a backdrop for a more radical story, one that sheds simple good vs. evil notions for explorations into anarchy and socialism, total disarmament, or those with pure intentions and past good deeds attempting to hold together worlds without violent force.
