What's your job?

What are your days like?

What do you like best about it? What are the challenges?

What have you done previously?

If you were going to do something else, what would you look at?

Mailman.

Same thing every day. Just takes longer or shorter depending on the mail and/or package volume. Go in between 7:30-8:00, get out between 3:30-4 on an average day.

I love the routine and that I get to keep mostly to myself. I'm able to listen to podcasts for 35-40 hours a week at work. Its a real tough learning curve (less than half of the people who are hired make it longer than a month) but once you get it you're good. Christmas season sucks. We only get paid overtime for three weeks in December but from October through the New Year is almost like a different job with how busy it gets. But we make up for it at other times in the year.

Only other job was at a liquor store from age 17 to like 25.

No idea what I would do if not for this... UPS? FedEx? :D

I think I've brought this up.

I help run the Regulatory Reporting group for a big financial services company. Not as glamorous as it sounds; it's a -ton- of math and a bunch of compilation/research/meetings. I know way more about, say, tax laws and loan syndication than I ever thought I would. I've been here just over a year. Hours are occasionally hell (I missed the entire seventh game of the world series), but I love the job and the people I work with.

Used to work at a Baltimore Asset Manager for about 10 years. SOX, SEC, review of accounting guidance, consolidation. Was occasionally fun, but did wear me out on occasion for...other reasons.

If I wasn't doing this, I'd love to do something with statistics/polls. Background for a politician or a baseball franchise.

What are your days like?

If you were going to do something else, what would you look at?

Two of them. Sales/Business Development for Sweet Course Baking Company (A division of Fresh Bakery), and part time server at The Cheesecake Factory.

Everyday is different. Sometimes I have deliveries to make. Sometimes I go to networking events. Sometimes I spend a whole day on the computer, emailing past clients just to check in and see how they are and if there is anything we can do. Paperwork, invoices, etc... Or I'm out taking samples to offices/restaurants for wholesale opportunities looking for new business.

I like best when a prospective client takes an interest, we set a meeting, and when I bring samples, they actually eat them in front of me and comment how much they like it. I hate when we set a meeting and then come to find out the client is like "I'm on a diet, but I'll make sure someone else tries these later and I'll get back to you." Or people want high quality baked goods and delivery at Sam's Club prices. It's a tough sell.

Previously:

High School -

Painter with my Aunt and Uncles former company.

Server/Line cook at Baughers.

Packed books and magazines for shipping at Anderson News. (I was 16 with access to every porn magazine shipped to every 7-11 in the region. I was, quite popular with my friends for the year I worked there. Lol. I'd also get Sports Illustrated and other mags of interest a day or two before anyone else.)

Grunt work at Tom Mitchell's Golf. (Swore I'd never paint anything again. First day on the job. "Okay, we need you to put a fresh coat of pain on the club house"). I rode a tractor one time ever there...and that was picking up range balls.

After H.S. -

U.S. Coast Guard.

A bouncer.

Cashier at Advance Auto Parts.

After USCG -

Server/Bartender at Red Robin.

Bartender at The Bullpen.

Baltimore City Fire Department, Firefighter and EMT.

Truck driver

Started and sold a small business.

If I was going to do something else:

Anything in sports. Scouting Football players. Working for an agency who represents players. Sports talk. Sports writing.

With my broadcasting background, If I could do sports talk for a living. I admire Dan Patrick's style the most and I would mimic that. No hot takes (Debate shows). No "enhanced radio voice"(NST). No click bait, vulgarity, sexism, any "isms" for ratings/clicks (Barstool). No coverage of what would be basically TMZ news, like "did you see what Britt McHenry did" or "did you see what so and so tweeted at so and so." Just few dudes talking about sports and more interesting things to a wide range of people, with interesting guests whose insight carries weight.

Think everyone pretty much knows what I do here but I work for a professional baseball agency. I handle marketing and client services.

In the past, I've worked at University of Maryland's Corporate Sponsorships for the Athletic Department, Ripken Baseball in several different positions, as well as the Athletic Communications Department for Xavier University.

You need to look into that independent contractor business Amazon is trying to launch. They want to get away from reliance (and expense) with the major mail carriers so they are looking for people to start their own businesses doing small fleets of delivery from local warehouses to areas around. So from here you'd pick up at their Bmore plant and deliver this immediate area. Google it and see if you can find the info, it's something like they'll give you the beginnings to get a few trucks under you and people to run them, and then you get a sweet sweet contract delivering what you are already delivering for the USPS ;)

I own my own bookkeeping/accounting business. I work mostly with start ups and small businesses. I hate when companies get too big and corporate, and like to keep things where you can talk to people and use logic and problem solving, not just run into canned corporate excuses and red tape.

I work from home 99% of the time, which people go "oh you're so lucky" but they don't realize that means you're basically on call 24/7 and there's no such thing as a "day off". Sure you can tell people you aren't working a certain day, but if something pops up on their end, they don't care. Trying to work with little girls running around the house isn't exactly easy either. It wasn't too bad when it was just the older 2 and they were in school so I had daytime hours to get stuff done, but now with the baby, that's out the window and it's pretty much trying to squeeze work into whatever free minute I can find, weekends included. I mean sure, I don't have to go anywhere, or deal with people usually...but it's just not as glamorous as people try to pretend it is.

I did some time in retail management. I did some time serving/bartending. I got out on good behavior and never look back :)

I haven't decided what I do going forward, if I grow to a slightly larger firm and take on more clients and people underneath me, or if I keep it small and solo. Pros and cons of having to replace clients over time vs having overhead. Might think about that more once I finish my masters in Accounting and Financial Management this year.

I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?
