Nice to see the k rate rise and bb rate drop as he moved up.

What do you mean?

I just can't get onboard the Drew Rom hype train with a near 4 ERA in AA, and barely a 9 K/9 ratio. Just feels like all the other "barely" pitching prospects we've got.

He’s 21 and pitching well in AA, that’s not very common. Grayson is a freak of nature.

I’m not sure there is a Drew Rom hype train, he’s in the same mold as the Zac Lowther’s and Alex Wells of the world, but he’s a few years younger than they were at each level.

I see a few of the Minor League O's guys on social media hyping him up. That he's 21 makes me feel better about it. Lowther/Wells makes more sense, I just hear people mention his name a lot as if he's upper echelon.

If he can add some velocity he could be. Can’t assume that so I think he could be a back end of the rotation guy or above average reliever.

Casey Mize had a 3.20 ERA and under 9 K/9 in AA at age 22 a few years back. He was around a top 20 prospect.

Dustin May had a 3.74 ERA and between 9-10 K/9 in AA at age 21. He was around a top 20 prospect.

No one is calling Rom a top 20 prospect, but his #s are good for his age IMO. Age matters so much with evaluating these guys. But yeah it would be better if he could add some velocity. Some can, some can't.

The O's minor league philosophy with pitching the past couple decades has seemed mostly to be, develop them to be the best minor league pitchers with the best stats. Worry about the major league development they'll need, once they earn the promotion up.

If now, they're sacrificing stats for development (like velocity in this case), I think that could be big for the long term.

And when we had Eric Longenhagen on before the season he indicated that in all likelihood he won’t add velo. Even if so, he’s doing something right to pitch this well against advanced hitters at his age.

Interested to see how he does against better hitters. Issue with him has been that he can get roughed up.  Ks and BBs are good, but a little on the high side for HR and H allowed.  My amateur take from the statline would be to wonder if his stuff is just average and he really needs to be in a groove with the command to pitch well.  May be some "crafty lefty" bias creeping in there.

4.2 IP 1 R 9K 4 BB in his AAA debut.

Both the K and BB were season highs (also 4 BB in his final AA start).
