This is where the violence/riots can't possibly help. Hope it happens somehow. I mean DC would be neat enough, but not the same.

Figure this hurts Chicago too.  But the reality is, all major cities suck when it comes to this stuff, so its hard to single out BMore.

Just a perception thing, given this is going to be drawing international audiences. Maybe it won't factor in much, I certainly hope it doesn't.

Well, we all know perception is worse than reality in the eyes/minds of people.  That's just reality.

But still, your perception of crime in those other cities has to be similar.

Yeah, I don't see Baltimore edging out 7 of those cities. Nashville, Orlando, Cincy they can beat. That's about it.

The US has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list is to be narrowed down to 10 by 2021. Thus far, according to Yahoo, cities in contention to host are New York/New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Houston, Kansas City, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington, Baltimore, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco/San Jose, and Cincinnati.

Exactly one city on this list does not have a MLS team (or one coming).

No chance Baltimore gets one with DC and Philly and NYC (and Boston, surely) getting them.

Probably:

Boston

New York

Philadelphia

Washington

Atlanta

Los Angeles

San Jose

Seattle

Chicago

Dallas

Maybe Boston or Philadelphia or Seattle get dropped for Kansas City or Nashville (which I see as a real dark horse to get some games) just for flyover balance.

Where do they put the final? Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, or Mexico City?

I’ll bet they have it at MetLife. NYC is the biggest melting pot on Earth.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Such an awful stadium aesthetically for such an event, but yeah. It's New York. Not the Nation's capital, but certainly North America's capital.

Been out of touch for a couple of days so late to chime in with some thoughts.

1. Yes 48 teams is too freaking many. And way too many in my book. There is no soccer reason to do this its money and nothing else. Remember that EVERY country on the planet gets to play in the World Cup. Every single one that wants to. People forget that its a two year long tournament and what is commonly thought of as the World Cup is only the final tournament.

2. The final will be played in the US. Canada and Mexico only get preliminary matches. All quarterfinal and further matches will be in the US. If I had to pick a final location right now I'd venture LA.

3. FIFA has not decided yet how to deal with the three host countries and allocating auto bids. This will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I have to imagine that the US, at a minimum, will get an auto bid since we are hosting the majority of the matches but then this is FIFA we are talking about.

If they expand to 48 gotta imagine all three host countries would get auto bids

I tend to agree Pedro but the problem is then how to deal with CONCACAF qualifying? Do you still give CONCACAF threee qualifying spots like now (or perhaps 4 or 5 under the expanded format)?  If you take Mexico and the US out of qualifying (and Canada) then the remaining three qualifying spots would look like Costa Rica (they ARE a good side) and two other real minnows that have no business being there. This is going to be a sticky mess. Good for the US and CONCACAF but not so good for the actual product on the field.

I'm assuming some major venues are out.  By regulation, don't they have to play soccer on grass?  Guessing some of these football stadiums aren't equipped to swap around playing surfaces at will.

how will the Concacaf qualifying work for the 2026 World Cup if all three nations receive the auto-bid?

NickP they haven't figured that out yet. I think they will wait until FIFA determines how they will handle the auto bids (I wish they did away with them especially now that they are expanding to 48) then CONCACAF will figure out how to deal with regional qualifying.

Apparently Baltimore is still in the running as a host city for the World Cup!
