Take with a grain of salt. Wikipedia after all. But interesting tidbit about PJ Walker.

Walker joined the newly-formed XFL for the 2020 season. The Pittsburgh Steelers called the XFL office to ask if they could sign Walker for one week ahead of their matchup with the Baltimore Ravens in October 2019, as Walker was a similar player to Ravens starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. The XFL blocked the signing, as Walker was already under contract with the league.

It is amazing to hear how teams try to duplicate Lamar in their preparations.

I've seen that from multiple sources. Makes sense. Not many people out there can mimic Lamar.

I think the XFL might have just folded.

Breaking: The XFL suspended operations Friday morning and laid off nearly all of its staff, multiple sources told
@SeifertESPN and@FieldYates The league currently has no plans to return in 2021.

That is a shame.  I thought the games were decent.  I know they canceled the rest of their season, but if I am not mistaken, Vince promised to pay the players for the whole year.

I didn't watch after week 1. I need to decompress after the Super Bowl.

Starting these things right after Super Bowl isn't a good idea. Start them in May when the luster of baseball's opening month is gone and it's a distraction for those not invested NBA/NHL Playoffs.

Then the season can be over leading into NFL training camp and the players that are half decent can be signed as FAs.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson (as part of a group) has bought the XFL for $15M.

The Rock has a lot of money, but I hope his investors have deep pockets.  They are going to lose more than 15M

I’m hoping they realize that individual ownership of a sports league isn’t going to work and that they seek individual team owners. That kind of investment will go a long way and split the risk, so that if one team fails it doesn’t tank the whole league.

I agree.  I actually thought the football was ok.  They need IMO to be a feeder league for the NFL.

100% agree. The NFL needs it too.

I just realized this morning a big part of what worked against it this time is that it had a single solitary owner vs 8-12 that all shoulder the load.

Jeremy- are you taking pre or post covid? I just assumed covid was fully responsible because ratings were solid as was attendance. But was it not doing well even before covid?

No, it was just starting to drop numbers wise right before Covid hit. The trends were a little worrying but with anything you have to give it some time and see if it bounces back. The NFL can survive poor attendance because of their tv deal. The xfl wasn’t there yet. But having 12 owners lose a couple million is easier to live with than one guy losing $40m.

What sucked was the only thing to do at that point was to give it some time and increase the sample size and then Covid hit and took that away and Vince took his chance to dump it real fast. Pulled the trigger too early I think but he didn’t want to pay people in a shut down.

We can look at how he’s handled wwe and get a good feeling it’s him to blame. Cutting a huge chunk of employees and making $40m in profit last quarter.
