Sports on Earth: 10 World Cup Teams to Watch

Lots of countries to pull for. I have a friend from Germany who I watched the 2014 finals with so I will always be pulling for them even though they don't really need it.

Rooting for Iceland and Panama for obvious reasons but I loved Croatia, Portugal and Spain so I'll be pulling for them too.

Still excited to get into this again but missing the USA definitely sucks.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Yep, there's a reason the US is trying to organize an NIT.

Maybe they should have an NIT.

Check out the USMNT thread....they are floating the idea of exactly that.

The only reason that Group D is the "group of death" is because it has one giant and three evenly matched decent at best teams. Simple fact is there really, for the first time in a long time, no honest Group of Death.

They need to do away with automatically putting the host country into the A Pot and do it based on ranking like everyone else. I get that it's good PR when your host has the best chance possible of getting out of the group stage. But it gets ridiculous when the lowest ranked team in the entire field, as Russia is, gets added as the "top-tier" to an already easy grouping. At the very least do it so that the host country is bumped up no more than 1 grouping from where they should be....so Russia would have been in Pot C.

The FIFA rules committee just voted across the board to add Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to the Laws of the Game. Expect a decision on whether or not it will get used this summer in Russia sometime by the end of this month.

Simply put -  there is no reason not to.

Business Insider: With the US out of the World Cup, Fox Sports has turned to a DNA testing company in hopes of generating fan interest

Fox Sports has teamed up with the genome testing company 23andMe and launched the "Root for Your Roots" campaign to encourage fans to find new countries to watch and root for in this World Cup.

I gotta give them credit for being clever with this idea....but oh man, FOX is so screwed with this World Cup deal they made. You can cut the desperation with a saw.

Dont usually watch FS1...did a fair amount today. They were pushing hard. Lots of promos, etc. The time difference, and lack of USA obviously hurts...but I think the WC will still get a fair amount of attention here.

I doubt I will watch much, if any at all. Every group stage match starts before noon out here, and many of them 6am or earlier, and I imagine it'll be the same for the knockout round. I'll either be too busy or have no inclination to get up in the middle of the night to watch, especially with no rooting interest.

One thing going for them is that other than the middle of MLB season there is nothing at all to compete for attention sports-wise. I think even MLS pares its schedule back some while the WC is going on.
