CBS Sports: World Cup 2018 odds: Germany early favorite to repeat; US 50-to-1
At 5/1, Germany is the early favorite, followed by Argentina (8/1), Brazil (8/1), Spain (8/1), France (10/1), Holland (12/1), Italy (15/1), and Belgium (15/1).
The United States and Mexico are tops of the CONCACAF sides, both at 50/1 followed by surprise performer Costa Rica, who sits at 200/1. Canada is 500/1 and Guam is 2500/1. Good value there, maybe.

4 months in footy can be an eternity, not to mention 4 years. Who knows, there could be an American Messi by then.
As to Germany, won't most of their team be about 30 in 4 years? I would guess most of those guys are in their mid-20's now and be about 30 for Russian WC. Not that 30 is old, it just seems most footballers (keepers exempt) seem to peak in their early to mid 20's and are on their way down by 30. I know, open ended statement but for the sake of generalizing.

That's impressive. And when you consider that their current core is likely to be supplemented further between now and then (Draxler, Lassoga, etc) Germany has really done a great job at developing players.

I think Belgium will be scary good in 2018... if they actually play well together, of course. But yeah, German will have a great chance to repeat.

Slight hit for Germany actually, Lahm announced he's retiring from international competition. That being said, he would've been 34 anyway.

Check it out....a World Cup story that has nothing to do with FIFA. Guam is a member, is participating in the current round of qualifying, and doing well so far. Who knew?

When I was in the Air Force, I once spent a week in Guam during a training exercise. I bet that'd qualify me to play for them....if I was 20 years younger and any good at soccer, that is.
75% of their players....that's about as much support as Guam has ever received from the US for anything, despite being a pretty important US territory since WWII.

While I'm disappointed that we didn't make it, I'm hoping I'll take less flak for rooting for Die Mannschaft.

When Italy, Netherlands, Chile, USA, Ghana & Cameroon miss the World Cup, that suggests more countries are getting better at the sport. That in itself is not a bad thing.
Maybe they should have an NIT.

Isn't the count going up to 48 teams for 2022?
EDIT: Looks like that change goes into effect in '26.

Not until 2026. North America is likely to get the WC for that anyway, not sure if that would guarantee entry to the WC or they would need to qualify with more teams being allowed in.
