I'm planning a trip for September that will definitely include some hiking and may include rafting if there's any suitable whitewater around, but I'm not that familiar with what the area has to offer in this regard. Any suggestions for places within three hours of Baltimore? Note that we are inexperienced whitewater rafters.

I've never been, but my scout troop has. Im on my phone so I don't know the correct spelling but the Yak a haney River in PA is known for good whitewater rafting.

Thanks Chris even though that spelling is way off. ;)

Youghiogheny is what I assume you're talking about. Seems like a good option even though it's a bit further than I'd like.

Yes that's it haha. It is probably a bit out of your price range. Ill try and research/ask around for closer places this weekend.

Check out the Harper's Ferry area in WV. Lots of different options and companies.

Yeah, Harpers Ferry is definitely a solid option. The rapids seem rather tame, though. I don't want class V rapids, but III and possibly IV would be nice.

There are some 3 and 4s up there, but I THINK they are up on the Potomac (as opposed to the Shenandoah) and up above HF.

Before kids I used to go tubing up there 5-6 times a season, but could never get my friends to step up to rafting. You'd have to check with the places, but I know from talking to the families that ran the places we used they have some up there somewhere, just not 100% sure where.

I know it's great for hiking too, some great trails out on the canal.

Obviously not local, but the only time I went Whitewater Rafting was on the Ocoee River in Tennessee.

Really enjoyed it, for those that might ever get down there.
