Mallet plus butter knife. Whack the knife with the mallet instead of using your hand. Especially late in the season, August or September, when crabs shells are much thicker and harder.

The real debate is do you remove the shell before or after you take the legs off. I remove the legs and claws first. Try to get as much of the meat as possible when taking the backfin off.

I have played around with and I almost always do legs first. However when I took the shell off first when breaking away the legs you get more meat off the break away :)
<p>I am pretty sure Shack is thinking of PBR.
