Which is why people don't want to abandon their homes and will put themselves in danger next time. Despicable human beings

Yep. Sad that you have to risk your life because a few people are horrible human beings.

Shit like that deserves to be plastered everywhere and blown up by the media just as much as every other issue they try to make big stories.

Of course, it will be largely glossed over by many.

USA really had a bunch of little things happen that prevented a disaster. Which is awesome but my concern is the next time. It's natural for people to see this and get a false sense of security and avoid the mandatory evacuation next time.

Definitely.  We ran from a hurricane that didn't come once and now my mother thinks meteorologists are useless.  People don't understand probability.

They spend a lot more on theirs than we do on ours (even though we're the ones with hurricanes)... because nobody over here (including me) wants to pay taxes...

Their model is also way more computationally intensive... I don't know if that's why they release theirs every 6 hours while we do ours every 3 hours, but it might be... modelling weather is pretty much an unsolvable problem, to the point where just seriously trying takes immense computational resources... which mainly means time....

BTW, the planned federal budget cuts NOAA's measly $5.6b budget by 17%.... including a 22% cut to their satellite data division... this would likely kill at least 2 scheduled climate satellites.... one of them is s'posed to do 14 polar orbits per day, which none of them do now... (until I read about it, I never even thought about a polar orbit)...the other one is s'posed to replace an existing one that's working but old and tired and more-or-less obsolete.... it's like a '79 Datsun and they wanna replace it with a new Tesla that can do more tricks better, providing data streams that get scientists excited... somebody should make "Support NOAA" bumper stickers.... hell, even people who hate gov't-in-general still like NOAA...

The bad news is that NOAA recently came out with a new and improved model... that has worse performance than the previous model. That's not a good sign.

Worse performance based on what?

Irma was bad, but it could have been much worse.

A fortunate circumstance by pretty much every measure. Obviously a significant amount of loss, but not nearly as much as people thought there may be.

I hope people don't spend time playing the blame game, instead of just being fortunate that things weren't so bad.

The only blame there could be is to stop habitating land like the Keys which isn't supposed to be habitable.

The news people are bummed because they didn't get much Cat-5 destruction to show video of....  despite the fact that they launched into the kind of 24-hour coverage that's best described as "Disaster Porn"...

Instead, we've got Cat-3 and Cat-2 damage over an area that's unbelievably huge... which makes for great human suffering but lousy TV....

This hurricane season won't let up.  Maria hit Puerto Rico as a Cat4, this is the strongest hurricane to hit the island since 1932.

My best friend owns a house in Vieques, an island off of southeast coast of Puerto Rico.  They got real lucky to avoid damage from Irma, but this one might completely destroy the home.  They are high up on the island, but the winds alone could knock the home down.  Really hoping it's still there once this thing passes, and that their caretaker who lives there most of the time and has become a friend of mine himself is safe.  He's the type of guy that will be out helping anyone who needs it, which is great but also puts him at grave risk if he's not prioritizing his own safety.

Maria, following on the heels of Irma, will make it years before these islands can recover.  We have traveled a good bit and have spent time on may of these Islands and there is just no where to hide for the inhabitants.

Good luck and God speed to your friends and anyone else down there.

That's INSANE.

In this day and age you'd have to think that would be impossible to happen.

Apparently 100% of Puerto Rico is without power.  If that lasts for 4-6 months...
