First Game of the final round of World Cup Qualifying is 1 month away!
Final round of qualifying gets underway today at 4! Too bad I won't get to watch is I don't have the random channel that's carrying the game.

SI: Mile High Pressure for US vs. Costa Rica (10pm tonight)
http://sportsillustr.../?sct=sc_t11_a4
US is up 1-0 in the 29th minute... the Denver field is covered in snow.... must be a nightmare for Costa Rica dealing with that, and the Denver altitude.

Really fun to see, though. Probably the best possible home-field advantage.

Joe Sheehan @joe_sheehan 5m
I mean, now when they dive and stay down, they can make snow angels
Love the "Let them play!" chant as the ref stops the game.

US wins 1-0. They played the entire game, too.
They certainly didn't make it easy on their selves, several careless fouls late in the game near the 18. By then though the field was pretty bad and the Costa Rican players couldn't get much if anything on the free kicks. Costa Rica has protested the game but I would be highly surprised if this game has to be replayed. Bring on Mexico!

With how these third world countries doctor their fields (i.e. make them smaller, don't cut the grass, don't properly grow grass on the field, etc) so that their team has an advantage when we have to go there, I would like to suggest the US schedule every March qualifier in Denver (or any other snow ridden city) all the time...and if not, play all qualifiers in Seattle/Portland in those MLS stadiums where the fans are awesome and half the stadium won't be from the opposing country (like when they play in DC, etc)...
Great post.
I find Costa Rica protesting the game to be in poor taste. The game was stopped, their players also argued for the game to be continued.

If this protest is upheld, the US should protest every single game not in the US or Mexico due to sub standard field conditions...
It's a known fact these countries make their fields shorter and do everything they game to make the field "unplayable" to give their country an advantage, so why can't the US do the same??

At this point, if you get out of the stadium with your life still intact, it's a bonus for the USMNT
That being said, if they take care of business at home, they'll (at worst) be the 3rd place team in the NA region and qualify for the WC, so essentially, if they are able to squeeze a point out of this game, it's just icing on the cake. Also, this game means much more to Mexico than it does the US so the pressure is squarely on Mexico in this game and if the US can get through the first 30 minutes or so without giving up a goal while putting some pressure on Mexico, they may get tight and US could steal one...
Will be interesting to see if they go with the same back line as they did with Costa Rica...
