Yep, certainly earned another outing.  Nobody will be expecting extended success from him and Watkins, but keep handing them the ball for now.

Akin is a reliever anyway and probably would excel in the role. As others have said, keep running Wells and Watkins out and jumpstart Akin’s inevitable transition to the role he can succeed in.

Most starters are worse the more times through the order, but Akin gets terrible even the second time through. Relieving may be the answer.

I agree that Wells should stay up and get starts for a while.

I think that was Tyler Wells, although I get them mixed up.  I was expecting the photography Wells to speak with an Australian accent.

Optioning Wells with a 28 man Opening Day roster is very surprising to me. 

This is not some guy that needs further development.  He is what he is.   He can help a roster, he's not going to last as a ML starter. 
Why wouldn't he be on the ML roster at this point?

I really thought he would be the 5th starter to begin the year.

Sending him down early enough so that they can call him back up a few days into the season?

It is possible he still is.  They do not need a 5th starter until the 12th, so maybe they carry an extra bat or reliever then call him up for the 12th.
