A snippet of a very informational piece...

Orioles director of pitching development Rick Peterson recently spent some time at Triple-A Norfolk where he got to work with pitcher Jake Arrieta for the first time.

Peterson was able to show Arrieta his biomechanical analysis results from earlier in the year and begin to work on some things to try and get the right-hander back on track after he went 3-9 with a 6.13 ERA in 18 Orioles starts.
"When we sat with Jake and reviewed his analysis, Jake was very inquisitive about things that he saw in his analysis and he really asked a lot of questions. Jake is very introspective," Peterson said.
"I think he realizes that his talent is way too good for the way that he pitched there. He was very interested about his analysis and some of the corrections we can make. He said, 'I don't want to just make some minor adjustments, I want to build this delivery to last.'

I also found this blurb about Matusz to be interesting...

Meanwhile, Peterson has met with left-hander Brian Matusz, but it sounds like he has been less involved with him at this point.
"We talked about some things I felt would be helpful for him. He felt really good actually about where he was delivery-wise, so we really only made a couple of really small tweaks and then it's wait and see and go out and pitch," Peterson said. "We'll observe and give some feedback on it. We really haven't done that much with Brian."

I hope Arrieta is doing things that aren't exactly designed to get him immediate results but rather to establish a consistent delivery.

His numbers have been very mediocre since moving down to Norfolk. Hopefully he can master whatever Peterson is teaching him and then start having more success. I don't expect to see him back in Baltimore this season, though.

Matusz, on the other hand, I think has a decent chance of being called up very soon if Britton's start tonight looks like his last one. Hopefully Britton will bounce back and pitch much better, giving Matusz more time down at AAA.

I don't think BMat really needed to change much.

Some may take that as Matusz not wanting to listen to instruction but I don't buy that.

His mechanics are obviously much better than they were because of his velocity is back and his secondary pitchers are better.

His issue is confidence and trying to be to fine...Kind of like Bedard.

From the article...

Peterson said there are some things Arrieta is doing in the games with the Tides designed to help him improve even if they are not what is best now for him to get the best results. So what is the key for Arrieta to get to a point where he can put up good big league numbers?
"It's a couple of things. It's, one, for him to have a comprehension of how his delivery feels and works for him in an efficient way and he has that understanding now," Peterson said.

From the article...

Right. I'm saying I would hope that this is the plan, because the results clearly haven't been there.

No offense, but I'm more interested to know if Peterson thinks Matusz needs to change much. We really didn't get an answer to that in the article. It says that Matusz is happy with his own mechanics.

It also said that they made a few small tweaks. That could very easily be all that was needed..it didn't sound to me that RP felt he had to overhaul BMat like he does with Arrieta.

What I got from that little blurb was that RP wanted him to change a few things and then, go see if those tweaks(combined with you feeling good now), work for you. If not, there is more work to be done.

Either way, I know some will look at this as BMat being a baby or whatever you want to say. I just personally don't see it as that.

I also thought it interesting that Matusz seems -once again- to believe he has the answer to his issues. Perhaps he's right, but this isn't the first time I've got the impression that Matusz prefers to avoid outside help. That may not be true, but it is just the impression I get from reading about this over the years. Then again, even if true to a degree, one could argue that based on the constant change in pitching coaches and pitching theories, he may try to avoid the confusion. I really don't know where the truth lies, but IMO Matusz is too talented to be in the position he is now.

Arrieta got rocked tonight down in Norfolk. Hope he was doing lots of good things with his delivery

8 hits and 3 walks with no K's for 5 runs in 3.2 IP. Raises his Norfolk ERA to 4.85 in 5 starts. Only once has he completed the 6th inning.

I really think we should have sold as high as possible on Jake in July. Hope he can get things back on track, but I'm not optimistic about his future as a starting pitcher.

I think it might take him a while with a revamped delivery and mechanics. Tillman wasn't starting to produce until a few starts prior to his getting called up. I'd leave him down there and get used to his new mechanics for a while. One of my favorite Rick Peterson quotes from earlier in the year was talking how he was more worried about "the process, not the results" with some of these guys. I think that's the mindset we need to have with Jake right now. It's difficult to have that mindset, because we aren't privy to "the process", but for now, in RP I trust.

Sometimes you have to take two steps back before you move forward. He has the arm and Peterson recognizes that his curveball is ++ at times. I would have been ok with trading him but I still believe in his talent.

Yea..him getting rocked right now is meaningless.

In fact, I would expect that if he is being torn down and being built back up.
