BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Baltimore Orioles have acquired RHP Gabriel Ynoa from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.

To make room on the 40-man roster, C Fransisco Peña has been designated for assignment.

Ynoa, 23, went 59-30 with a 3.36 ERA (297 ER/795.1 IP) and 1.17 WHIP in 136 career minor league games (128 starts). He made his Major League debut on August 13, 2016 against San Diego and pitched in 10 games (three starts) with the Mets last season, posting a 2.43 strikeout/walk ratio. Originally signed by the Mets as a non-drafted minor league free agent on November 19, 2009, Ynoa went 12-5 with a 3.97 ERA (68 ER/154.1 IP) over 25 starts with Triple-A Las Vegas in 2016, ranking third among Pacific Coast League pitchers in innings pitched, while also leading the 51’s in wins and starts.

Interesting move. Low risk as Pena wasn't going to play on the big club and perhaps this guy can be developed into something?

This doesn't open the door for another catcher now, does it?

Someone to split time with Castillo and DH from time to time.

Maybe someone who, I don't know, spent his whole career here so far and doesn't have a job yet.

Or am I crazy?

Not insane to think that he could come back, but I still don't think it's going to happen. The O's seem to have a lot of faith in CJ as a backup catcher, and even a starter when needed.

I agree, but with Castillo out much of the spring now with the WBC, it just hit me that maybe this is in the works. Matt and CJ getting most of the reps, with Sisco "learning the ropes"...

Or I'm really overthinking the fact that they got rid of Pena.

I'm still expecting Wieters to be back.

I'd be suprised if Wieters comes back but not completely shocked.   I just think Duquette likes these kinds of moves.   He got Gunkel for practically nothing and bought Verrett as well.    It's suprising that he can get this kind of player, especially one with an option, so cheaply.   Francisco Pena has no options and there has done nothing which suggests he should get the backup job over Caleb Joseph.  Now with Audry Perez and Sisco at Norfolk and Austin Wynns at Bowie we should have enough depth but I wouldn't be surprised to see another AAA type catcher signed who might go to Bowie.

Btw, this is a very good depth move. The Orioles are lacking options 6-9 for rotation spots when guys get hurt or suck.

Yeah, this is just a depth move and has nothing specifically to do with MW.

Doesn't mean he won't be back....how's that Brewers option looking?

....but Pena just seems like the next guy out, given the rest of the roster.

Even as well as he did, he only threw about half of his pitches for strikes against a weaker hitting team.

I like him for the 5th starter, but he's going to have to manage his pitches better.  Aquino might be a better option at this point, even if his stuff isn't as good.

Great effort last night.....especially for a guy that was struggling with AAA hitters.

These are the kind of efforts that get lost at the end of the season when we talk about [why?].

It's not the models fault and the Orioles didn't know it either.

He definitely needs a changeup to be a viable SP, but the FB/Slider are good enough. Live arm, and you gotta love zero walks. Good matchup behind the lefty starter for sure.

Of the 5th starter candidates since Tillman has been out I like him the best. I like that Asher is around the plate but his stuff is mediocre. Aquino may be a little better, but Ynoa has stuff that plays at the ML level. Now he just needs to develop the CH or come up with a third pitch.

9/21: 8ip, 5 hits, 1 er, 2 bb's, 3 k's

Stopped the bleeding. Maybe a long relief option next Spring.
