We had a better set than Madison. Their only big stadium song it was missing was Fuel. Gotta give them a hell of a lot of credit, those dudes played for a good 2.5+ hours. Definitely got my money's worth.

We had:
Hardwired
Atlas, Rise
Seek & Destroy
Harvester of Sorrow
No Leaf Clover (pleasant surprise, apparently first performance since 2011)
Now That We're Dead
Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Halo of Fire
(When Doves Cry)
Breadfan
The Memory Remains
Moth Into Flame
Sad but True
One
Master of Puppets

Spit Out the Bone
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman

Jealous that they did Breadfan. I love the Garage Inc. album Turn the Page and Whiskey in the jar gets all the air play, but Breadfan and some other deeper ones are so so great.

And When Doves Cry! I would love to hear that one.

You Minnesotans got a good show dontchaknow.

It was Hammett and Trujillo during one of Hetfield's vocal breaks.  You didn't miss much.

Night 1 of Metallica's 40th Anniversary concert streamed live on Amazon Prime last night at midnight (9pm San Francisco time where they played).

Night 2 is Sunday night, both shows are supposedly completely different set lists. I believe if you don't catch them (I won't see the Sunday show) will be available to stream in a week.

Night 1 had Some hits. Some deep cuts. One extremely deep cut that I even had to go onto my iTunes library and figure it out. They played Fixxer off RELoad. James commented it was the first time ever they played that song live. Then joked "and now you know why".

That said, here is my hastily thrown together top-40 for 40 Metallica songs.

40. Leper Messiah

39. Trapped Under Ice

38. Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult cover)

37. Broken, Beat & Scarred

36. King Nothing

35. All Nightmare Long

34. Sad But True

33. Spit Out the Bone

32. The Unforgiven

31. The Frayed Ends of Sanity

30. My Apocalypse

29. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

28. Harvester of Sorrow

27. Breadfan (Budgie cover)

26. Fuel

25. Blitzkrieg (Blitzkrieg cover)

24. Moth Into Flame

23. (Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth

22. Phantom Lord

21. Orion

20. Hit the Lights

19. Metal Militia

18. Am I Evil? (Diamond Head cover)

17. And Justice for All

16. Whiplash

15. For Whom the Bell Tolls

14. Disposable Heroes

13. The Call of Ktulu

12. Blackened

11. Ride the Lightning

10. Wherever I May Roam

9. Motorbreath

8. Fight Fire with Fire

7. Enter Sandman

6. The Four Horsemen

5. Creeping Death

4. One

3. Battery

2. Seek and Destroy

1. Master of Puppets

By album:

Kill em’ All – 8

Lightning – 6

Puppets – 6

Justice – 5

Black – 4

Load – 1

RELoad – 1

Garage Inc. – 4

St. Anger - 0

Death – 3

Hardwired - 2

I have Breadfan on cassette. It was the B side of the Enter Sandman single, if I remember correctly.

Speaking of Gararge Inc, the Black Sabbath cover of Sabra Cadabra/A National Acrobat is probably my favorite song on the album. Tuesday's Gone is outstanding as well.

Such fun to re-read this thread as Metallica is in STL FOR 2 NIGHTS!

We talked about not getting Creeping Death at the last Baltimore show and what did they open with tonight?

CREEPING DEATH!!

Night 1 setlist

Creeping Death
Harvester of Sorrow
Holier than Thou
The Memory Remains
Lux Aeterna
Too Far Gone
Fade to Black
Shadows Follow
Orion
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
The Day That Never Comes
Hardwired
Fuel
Seek and Destroy
Master of Puppets

Night 2 is Sunday and they already knocked out most of their tentpole songs.

If they play 16 again, Battery. One, and Sandman are 100% in. For Whom The Bell Tolls is 99% in. Figure 2 or 3 more from the new album. 10 other songs could be literally anything. I’m going to guess a couple of the ballads like No Leaf Clover and Hero of the Day. St. anger yet to represented so maybe Frantic? Hope we get a Garage Days in there. Am I Evil?

Can’t wait!

Coincidentally, the first time I ever saw them was 11/5/2004 in Tampa. Sunday is 11/5/2023, 19 years to the day later.

Had tix to see them at Painter Mills on their RTL tour (Armored Saint opened) but couldn't go due to school.  My best friend went, and they met the band after the show and got pics with them on the tour bus! I was was bummed but stoked for them!  I did see them on the AJFA tour and that was great.  Still wished I had seen that Painters Mill show!  My good friend still sees them with his sons.

I would have loved to have been born about 10-15 years earlier to be able to see them in their glory days. (As well as other things, like an Orioles World Series).

I feel like they are too big for arenas but don’t draw enough to sell out a stadium like they used to. The dome in STL where the Rams used to play, the stage is on the 50 yard line and the people on the floor extend to about the 20, maybe 10. Seating bowl is maybe 85% capacity. I was in between some jerks and I just moved a row back and 10 seats over where there were 6 open seats.

2 nights is quite a commitment.  I caught them on the last tour.  They gave us a recording of the concert, actually.

That’s cool. On their site, you can buy any live concert from 2003 on, and a few in the “vault” from older shows. I bought the mp3 of the live shows I’ve been to.

Night 2 setlist

Whiplash
Ride the Lightning
For Whom the Bell Tolls
King Nothing
72 Seasons
If Darkness Had A Son
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
You Must Burn
Call of Ktulu
No Leaf Clover
Wherever I May Roam
Moth Into The Flame
Blackened
Whiskey in the Jar
One
Enter Sandman

32 song weekend and no Battery!! Agh. Oh well. 32 songs and zero St. Anger representation. Not mad about that.

Ride the Lightning is my favorite album and we got 5 of the 8 songs. The ones we didn’t get are Fight Fire with Fire, Escape (famously played live only once ever) and Trapped Under Ice (28 times ever).

According to the website it was the 1,400th live performance of Enter Sandman. And 400th performance of Ride the Lightning, first played live nearly exactly 40 years ago, 10/31/1983. It looks like Puppets is the record holder at 1703 times. God bless the intern who keeps track.

Kirk’s guitar went out on the middle of One. So the middle couple minutes of that song was not typical.

Great weekend! The Ravens didn’t ruin it either!

Justice Album doesn't get enough credit. One is iconic, but probably the only song that gets air play. Harvester of Sorrow was the first single form the album. Blackened, Frayed Ends of Sanity, Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, all bangers. Even the band rarely plays them live, (although I've seen Blackend twice now). And Dyers Eve is only a 5-minute song. for those in the camp that every song on Justice is too long.

I caught them on the Monsters of Rock tour down in Miami back in '88, and then at the WPB auditorium the following winter.

They were an amazing metal band back in the '80s. I'm in the minority when I say the direction they took in the 90s turned me off. "Enter Sandman" was fun and all that, but it seemed at the expense of their almost progressive / exploratory metal of the '80s.

I will say though that Metallica and Soundgarden absolutely stole the MoR show that day. Pretty sure the other acts were Kingdom Come, Dokken, Scorpions (they were good), and Van Hagar (they were good too).

I've seen Metallica twice.

They were outstanding both times(And Justice fo All tour in Landover and a Festival at Ravens Stadium in 1999 I think.) I'll give a bit of a nod to the Capital Centre show because they had a bit more energy and they were younger. That said, I thought they blew away System of A Down and Korn in Baltimore. Kid Rock's performance was pretty strong.

I think it's a testament to their music and musicianship that they can mix up the set so much in back to back nights. Probably keeps the band fresh as well.

There aren’t many bands that can play 32 songs and only maybe 5 or 6 are considered a “deep cut”.
