I've been meaning to mention yacht rock somewhere around here...thought there was already a discussion in another thread, but I haven't been in the off-topic area in weeks, except to drop that Mr. Robot reminder.

Summertime is fast approaching, time to reboot this thread. Since last year, I've become obsessed and enthralled with the world of Yacht Rock (by the way, "Sailing" and "Peg" are the only actual Yacht Rock songs in this thread). Here we go (time for me to nerd out):

 

The term "Yacht Rock" was coined by 4 guys from L.A. on this absolutely incredible and hilarious Channel 101 web series: http://www.yachtrock...t-rock-episodes Just watch it. You'll come for Hollywood Steve's intros, you'll stay for JD Ryznar's Michael McDonald impression. The guys now host a weekly podcast called "Beyond Yacht Rock" where they create obscure musical genres (like "Sultry Hits", "Marina Rock", or "Try-N-Raps") and count down its top 10 songs. It's also amazing, listen to it.

 

Broadly, Yacht Rock was smooth music that was released predominantly from 1976-1984 in Southern California. It featured expensive-sounding production, premier studio musicians, and some of the catchiest grooves on the radio. Its roots came from R&B and Jazz, with Steely Dan basically bringing it to the forefront. From there, folks like Michael McDonald (and the Doobie Brothers), Kenny Loggins, and Toto (the premier studio musicians of Yacht) made a living on this musical genre.

 

Let's reboot this thing with the Yachtiest Yacht Rock song of them all, co-written by McDonald and Loggins:

 

 

And one of my underrated favorites, featuring Toto's Steve Lukather, Mike Porcaro, and Jeff Porcaro (which makes up for the fact that David Roberts is Canadian):

One of my favorite Yacht Rock albums is Bill Champlin's "Runaway", which was co-produced by Yacht Rock monsters David Foster and Kenny Loggins. This album came out after he left Sons of Champlin, and before he was chosen to replace Peter Cetera in Chicago. The album features a crazy amount of Yacht Rock personnel, including Jay Graydon, Steve Lukather, Richard Page, and Jeff Porcarco. Foster and Loggins also play on the album.

 

"Take it Uptown" was co-written by Champlin and Loggins and kicks off with a SWEET horn feature:

One of the best Yacht Rock albums out there is Pages' self-titled album from 1981, which was produced by one of Yacht Rock's best producers and session guitarists, Jay Graydon. Pages consists of Richard Page and Steve George, who were joined on this album by personnel such as Jeff Porcaro and Al Jarreau, and Graydon played on the album as well. After Pages, Page and George teamed up to form Mr. Mister.

 

The entire album is amazing, but O.C.O.E. (Official Cat of the Eighties) is one of the best. Porcaro sets an awesome groove in this one, and Graydon's guitar work is top-notch as always.

"No Lookin' Back" might be my favorite song that Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald co-wrote (outside of "What a Fool Believes" of course). It was released in 1985, and both guys recorded their own versions. I personally prefer the Loggins version, which was released on his Vox Humana album, but McDonald's version had more commercial success. McDonald isn't a big fan of this song anymore, as it came at the height of his drug and alcohol abuse (but dammit it's soooo good).

 

The Vox Humana album was co-produced by Loggins and Yacht Rock monsters David Foster and Michael Omartian, and features performances by Foster and Omartian, as well as big-time Yacht Rockers like Michael Landau, Steve Lukather, Neil Larsen, Michael Boddicker, Greg Phillingaines, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Paulinho de Costa, Sheila E, Richard Page, El DeBarge, Sheena Easton, The Pointer Sisters, and David Sanborn.
