Wrote up Donnie Hart for BSL to begin the year (http://baltimorespor...prospect-press/

A lefty reliever drafted in the 27th round will not show up on many radars, but I like Hart. He doesn’t generate a lot of velocity, but thanks to sidearm angle, his deception makes him someone of interest, especially given the Orioles recent success with Darren O’ Day and Mychal Givens. Hart, 5’11”, features a two-seam fastball (87-89 mph – 91 mph), a change-up (77-79 mph) and a slider (74-76 mph). He uses a circle-changeup grip and is able to generate a nice sinking motion on the pitch – it’s easily his best secondary. He’s also comfortable throwing the pitch to both left-handed and right-handed hitters. The slider is inconsistent and doesn’t have much movement to it. Because of the sidearm delivery, he does have trouble repeating mechanics. Thanks to a heavy fastball and good sinking motion on his change-up, ground-balls are not a problem.

Going Forward:
After a successful 2015 season, mostly in Frederick (A+) and a few innings with Bowie (AA+) and the Arizona Fall League, Hart figures to start the 2016 season in Bowie (AA). He’s a left-handed hitter killer, but I think he could be used for more than LOOGY purposes. Thanks to a deceptive delivery, ground balls and average strikeouts, he could be an interesting reliever moving forward.

Also profiled him on 2080 based on live viewings for 2016 (http://2080baseball....ts/donnie-hart/) - Prob an org guy, but worth watching.

Interesting player. Dominated lefties this year as expected. Hopefully that translates here, we could sure use it. And if he does stick, this would be a nice success story for a 27th round draft pick. I'll be rooting for him.

MASN: Showalter on Hart: “He’s got a chance to serve a role”

http://www.masnsport...rve-a-role.html

Hart hasn’t allowed a run in 16 games since the Orioles selected his contract from Double-A Bowie on July 15. No runs in 13 2/3 innings to begin his major league career.

Left-handed hitters are 5-for-29 with two walks and seven strikeouts against Hart. He struck out Kevin Kiermaier Thursday night leading off the top of the ninth inning. He retired David Ortiz in Boston. He’s bested Bryce Harper twice, including a strikeout.

The former 27th-round draft pick is an overnight sensation at age 26, with no Triple-A experience and no fear. The Orioles finally may have found their lefty specialist after the trade market and other internal options left them unsatisfied. And this was before the organization chose him as their minor league Pitcher of the Year.

“It bodes well,” Showalter said, “but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.”

Which takes us back to Hart’s smooth road needing a few bumps before the Orioles can start to figure him out.

“I’m more interested in the first time he gets squared up with a breaking ball strike or something happens and he gives up a couple runs. What happens his next outing and his next one?” Showalter asked.

“That’s a stage, being able to perform in that arena, and everything’s fine now. What happens when it gets a little sideways, which it does with everybody? Do they fight back?

“You’re seeing it some now with (Brad) Brach, Mychal Givens had a couple outings where he was really frustrated, and all of a sudden he’s right back on there. But you have to give them that opportunity in order for them to do it. But he’s got a chance to serve a role. We’ll see.”

I looked this up earlier and maybe it's interesting.

Donnie Hart was drafted with the 819th pick of the 2013 Amateur Draft.

Since 1965, he is the 3rd player taken in that spot to play in the Majors.

Dave Martinez (16 year career, 5795 ABs, 19.1 career WAR) owns the top spot at #819 with only Dan Ortmeier (1999, CWS, 4 seasons, 255 ABs, .721 OPS, -0.7 WAR) standing between him and the #2 spot at #819.

I don't know if being the second best pick at #819 in the draft is a thing, but hey, it's something.

It does mean you're in the majors, so great for him.

I was surprised he wasn't on the team in the first place given the O's relief pitching situation. They need lefty arms (at least according to conventional thought) and he has had some experience with albeit mixed results. But instead they went with a Rule 5 guy?
